J River with Naim Network Players
Posted by: codex on 17 April 2012
I am considering trying the trial of J River Media Centre, and wondered if anyone has any experience of using it with Naim network players.
At present, I have a RipNas streaming to ND5 XS.
I would be using the media centre more for a replacement for iTunes, which I find a bit frustrating, (keeps disconnecting from the RipNas) but I do not want to upset the configuration between the RipNas & Nd5 XS
Advice would be appreciated.
I had used JRiver for a while with my NDX. It was totally without issues and had a graceful UI. You can use it as server+control point or use the Asset server in your Ripnas and utilize JRiver as the control point. In any case it works fine. It has no issues with Naim network players; it has problems only with Naim servers. That's why it did not make sense for me because most of my music is on a Naim server and unfortunately JRiver can not connect to Naim servers (because of some incompatibility in the search function). It is a pity actually, because Naim does not provide a suitable control point for PC.
I think "trying the trial" is a good idea!
codex,
no need to wonder. Download the 30day trial, with full function. You will drop the meager $50 on day 2 I am guessing.
The Naim player will show up as a "Zone". Easy as can be.
Download the JRemote App ("+" app, $10 for both iPhone and Pad). It RULES.
I would be more than happy to help if you have any questions.
Of course they also have a very, very nice forum where you get the ear and advice of longtime users as well as the actual devs and company owner(s). Sweet.
Cheers!

What serendipity! I happen to have an HDX on loan, a (working) pristine Win7 box, and (finally!) a spare moment, and, now, this thread.
Just installed JRMC. I was not able to easily figure out how to use it to stream from a share on my Mac, but importing from it was easy. Local playback on the Altec 2.1 computer speakers sounds promising! Default cross-fade setting is awful.
Looking forward to finding out why Patrick is so determinedly smitten.
Also, finally installed the Wireworld Supernova6 on the Mac yesterday. The horserace is on.

Thanks to all for the advice.
I will certainly give it a try. I will download JRMC at the weekend and report back.
Patrick,
Thanks for the offer of help if I get stuck. I will certainly take you up on the offer.
Just a note, other than some "Smartlist" code i requested on the Forum to create some dynamic Playlists, I am using MC straight out of the box.
I have tweaked minor display settings like fonts and columns widths to my liking. I have also create a few views. But 99% of my interface is stock standard. And it is awesome.
I have only scratched the surface of MC's power and I dont really plan on digging deeper.

Nick, JRMC will not work with HDX, unless you misspelled and you actually mean NDX! It is a good control point on a PC for NDX.
You should not forget to activate DLNA in the options - it is off by default.
most of the default settings need attention. I suggest spending a few minutes going through each "header" in settings.
The default is not gapless replay, nor is ASIO or WASAPI etc... Track change defaul is "cross-fade" etc... Stop function is set to fade, not immediate, etc....
There is alot there as there is so much it can do.
Going through the settings will give you a decent overview of the surface capabilities.

Hi, aysil,
I see you are right about my borrowed HDX. I do hope to demo an NDX one day.
Thanks.

...Why? Are you not happy with the HDX you borrowed?
