SB touch very good into NDAC. I had sonos briefly before this and while sofware side superb , the sound was not as good at all to my ears. Did not want to risk the unknown area of sonos mods. Fozz

for me - easiest, and arguably more together as a system (but more expensive) is Sonos, however SB is more customisable, has more add-ons, and cheaper but does also need you to be more computer literate. As for sound, i dont think there is any difference if you are inputting to a DAC.

I've not tried the Sonos but I've just ordered an nDAC for my SBT - I'm a big fan of the SBT. It has  very good functionality and there is a new 3rd party app that allows the use of 192k digital output.

the W4S Sonos Connect sound great in to the Naim DAC, but it won't do hi-res at all if that is important - for CD rips is sounds really good.

go with a Touch.  No more computer knowledge needed than for Sonos in my opinion.  The Touch can be seen as a upnp/dlna device and therefore gives it much more flexibility.

When you move on to a Naim Player, you can repurpose the Touch as a Bedroom, OFfice, Garage, Basement or Backyard system.

And yes, it does hires which Sonos will probably never do.

Does the SB touch run off a NAS (I don't want a PC switched on 24/7 to access my music)?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure that they can use a NAS. If you go to the Logitech site you should be able to find the SBT manual so that you can check. There is also a SBT forum - easily found via google.

Yes and it is easy to setup.  I am running the SBT with a ReadyNas Duo into the nDac and it is superb!

+1 for the SB Touch, although I'm confused about what confuses you (analogmusic) - seeing that you write "They both are so good". Do you already know them (well)?

Yes - music servers like my Vortexbox have built in support for SB, Sonos and Apple as well as miniDLNA UPnP for Naim (it is quite Apple like: it just works). I'm sure other NASs must do something similar.

Sorry I meant they both appear to be very good in their own right.

Guido,

Just a little snarky question for you.  If Apple "just works" why do you use a Vortebox?

Hmmm ... there is no possible way I can answer that - you've got me on that one, Patrick

I could say something like because Naim decided to use the Unfriendly Plug n Pray standard for its otherwise rather wonderful streamer boxes, I was a bit stuck. Unfortunately, UPnP didn't support Apple. Had Naim opted for Delightful Apple's Amazing Protocol (DAAP) then it would have just worked ... but I have to admit that would just be cosmic debris.

I do not buy Apple products to the exclusion of all else - I like the Amiga (sad there is no support now), I like Unix and Linux and am very happy to use any products that runs on them.

I do wish Apple would support FLAC play back and that UPnP came as standard on OS X and they re-introduced HyperCard to keep all the details of my music on, but alas life is never quite like that  I also wish dBPA ran on a Mac (or under Linux) ....

However, the Vortexbox is ideal really - it is built as a music server and you can just build your server to suit - it does it right: application first, hardware second.

I'm sure the software you use is very good, but I can't run it or even try it as it doesn't work on my computer systems .... and I can't really think of anything the Vortexbox doesn't do that I would need (if it could transcode to WAV on the fly that would be nice) so I probably don't need to change.

If Spoon ports his products to Linux or OS X then I'll give them a go - same for J River; but until that day I'll have to stay with my Vortexbox - though I do kind of like those Soolooos things.

All the best, Guy

Unfortunately, UPnP didn't support Apple.

It is the other way around my friend.  Apple doesn't [directly] support UPNP.  Just like they dont support FLAC.  Josh Coalsen would be absolutely elated to have Apple, and by extension iTunes, support FLAC.  It would be totally free for them to do so.  Apple would rather, as they always do, develop their own thing then charge exorbitantly for implementation.

Wishing Naim had gone down the other path EXCLUSIVELY, would be like wishing Naim had forgone USB inputs on the digi range and used Firewire ports instead.

Airplay/DAAP does not support multiple streams to multiple devices and cannot do high-res audio.  Why would anyone want to adopt that protocol?  AAANNNDDD pay dearly to do so???

I see. Its possible to trial most of the SB system since the server is free as well as computer versions of the software running on the SB Touch, remotes etc are all freely available - I suggest you check the forums for further details.
