Alternative to Uniti board upgrade
Posted by: Jon Myles on 17 April 2012
Hi everyone,
Slightly unusual query - but here goes.
I was considering having my Uniti upgrade to 24/192 capable. But having been quoted £500 plus carriage (so you're talking at least £600) I'm wondering if there are other ways?
Would buying a different 24/192 streamer and routing it through the Uniti amp be feasible? I'm not worried about the extra boxes.
Thanks

Yes you could run the analogue output from the NDX through a Uniti - I wouldn't though.
What do you need the upgrade for - I can't find any 192 stuff to play - I have some 24/96, which my UQ does a great job with.
I don't think a Mac with the new hiFace would play 192 through a Uniti as my understanding is the DAC implementation in the Uniti is the limitation, but e-mail Naim and I'm sure they'll clarify. A Mac with the new hiFace would play 192 through a Naim DAC, for sure.
On the other hand unless you are planning to listen to 24/192 music do you really need the upgrade Jon ?

Edit - Guido's beaten me to it
Thanks for the replies.
Thinking about it - you all have a very good point.

Hi Jon
I had my Qute upgraded for £300 by Creative Audio in Shrewsbury -top blokes.
I dropped it off early one Saturday morning, took 'She Who Must Be Obeyed' shopping and picked the 'Qute back at the end of the day and even with her shopping it cost less than £500!
I guess a visit to your nearest Naim dealer might be in order?
PS, whilst acknowledging that there is not a lot of 24/192 out there right now - you can't put a price on having your 'Qute turned into the worlds most expensive clock radio!

Hi SRMT
Thanks for the tip. I might well give them a ring. A lot cheaper than my current dealer quote of £500 plus carriage to and from Salisbury - which will be around £650 all told. And I have to take it into the dealer myself in central London.
I could drive to Shrewsbury, have it done, take my wife shopping and drive back and still have change from £650.
Frankly, I'm amazed Naim don't standardise these sort of prices.
Thanks again.
Jon
