Record Store Day this Saturday. Queues outside record shops

Posted by: warwick on 17 April 2012

As some of you will know, this Saturday is Record Store Day in the UK and USA.

Let's get out and support our religion. Pop by your local independent record shop, even if

just to say hello. Use it or lose it. Many one-off releases.

I'm going to be naughty and post the link http://www.recordstoreday.co.uk/

Last year the long queue outside Sister Ray Records in Berwick St, in the Soho area of London, (photo on cover of Oasis's 'What's The Story Morning Glory') nearly had me in tears.

Lewks Records, Downham Market, Norfolk, has live music outside the shop as part of their celebration of the day.

As a small independent shop trading for over 30 years in a small town in the middle of, frankly, not very much, they have to be imaginative to continue trading.  Very helpful.  LPs generally have to be ordered because they can't holf huge stocks, but at least if the sleeve comes crinkled or the vinyl is blemished, you can take it back easily.

I would like to know what the special Beatles vinyl release is going to be?

I wish i had a record shop near me?

I would love to stand in a Q for a hour or 2 for the Steven Wilson album.

Only to find they had sold out when i got into the shop because they only had 5 or 8 to start with and they had already gone/been put aside for there best vinyl customers of the year.

Its great for shops,

We need more of them imo.

Why cant they have a record shop day for us that use the same shops online year in year out but cant get to one?

Let alone stand in a Q for a hour or two?

I have all Steven's Solo/PT/no-man/B Field vinyl/ CDs/dvds and a shed load of other peoples vinyl and cds he has worked and played on.

Its not fare imo.

I bet come Saturday midday there will be a few on evil bay at stupid money??????

Sorry for the rant,

I am just pissed off i cant get a copy of a album i like.

Today's the day. Make sure that you visit a store near you (if you possibly can).

Some good stuff there Lontano.

I get the impression now that this great idea of Record Shop Day is being used by many, non shop keepers,  as a great way of making a few quid, get in buy put them on e-bay.

Like concert tickets , I guess greed just takes over ,but does leave a rotten taste behind.

My first record store day as I just bought my first turntable a few weeks ago and I even picked up my Stageline N today!

I'm in Canada so I think the RSD special releases were a bit different than other countries.

Today's RSD Purchases were:

- Dr. John - Locked Down

- Black Keys - El Camino (Limited Edition)

- The Rough Guide to Psychedelic Africa

- The Rough Guide to Blues Legend Charley Patton

- The Rough Guide to African Roots Revival

- Destroyer's Rubies

Other vinyl was also purchased as two of the local record stores had some nice sales going as well.

Stores were quite busy and I was told there were line ups earlier.

Picked up Grateful Dead's "Dark Star" (Paris, 1972) and "Forever Miles" (alt. takes from the 1981 three CD release).   No sign of the Steven Wilson LP or the Laura Marling single in any of my local shops, so I just ordered one of each from evilBay.

After seeing my rant above,

A kind forum member managed to pick me up a copy of the Steven Wilson vinyl album.

And phoned me from the shop to ask if there was anything else i wanted? while he was in there.

There are some nice people on here.

A very happy,

Stu.

Sister Ray was very busy early afternoon yesterday. Picked up Pink Floyd London 1966/1967 with Syd Barrett which will be 'Naimed' shortly.

Quite a crowd at my local stores.  Lots of good stuff.  Unexpected find was a 7" 45 on the Motown label of The Mynah Birds - a Toronto band featuring Neil Young with Rick James on bass!  That one went quickly.
