Ready NAS album artwork

Posted by: Daunt on 24 April 2012

Another dumb question but all contributions gratefully received.

I am a MAC user firstly and am using XLD to rip CD's and Switch to convert existing files and as a tag editor where necessary. So far so good.

The problem I am having is with album artwork not showing up when I use NStream on my iPad or more accurately, some album artwork IS appearing but not much.

I am using a Netgear readyNAS Duo with the music stored on a folder (with the name Naim) located in the Media folder on the NAS. Music stream fine and I am generally very pleased with the results sonically, it's just frustrating not being able to see the artwork - confusing too at times!

Further to this I have ascertained that the only artwork that does display is that which has been imported from iTunes (I know, I know!) as Mp4a (Apple lossless). All the flac conversions and rips seem not to carry artwork!

Having this problem too. I thought having album art is a matter of getting 'folder.jpg' in the directory of the audio files? Is there a concise guide out there on ripping and tagging?

Which streaming software are you using on the ReadyNAS?

I am a Mac user so things do get a little more complicated but here goes, my current solution is as follows (sounds complicated but is very easy in practice):

Firstly, I use XLD to rip my CDs into FLAC format. This works fine for me and produces, in a good few cases, superior quality to the CD played on my Uniti (error correction etc I suspect). I have a few AIFF files on iTunes which I like to have on my NAS and I use Switch for this which is also a very handy audio tag editor if your ripped music doesnt display as you'd like on n-Stream. I am also using Majestic to play my iTunes folder directly but this is really only for background music.

I added a folder called 'Naim' (you can call it what you like) in the pre-existing 'Media' folder on ReadyNAS. Inside that i create, as I go along,  a simple folder structure of Artist or Composer names and inside those folders Album name folders. So, looking at the NAS on the computer the directory tree would look something like  - ReadyNAS > Media > Naim > Bob Dylan > Modern Times

I pop jpeg artwork files into the album folders and name them 'Cover' and (through trial and error) follow the following procedure:

Log into the ReadyNAS and navigate to Services > Streaming Services, go to ReadyDNLA and select 'Rescan media files' and wait until it reports that the scan is complete. Then go to tools in n-Stream and hit clear image cache.

All the album artwork will now appear where appropriate. I am impatient and tend to scroll through everything and, as I go along, the artwork is added to the cache. I am not sure whether, if I waited, this would happen automatically.

A further refinement is to add jpeg artwork files to the Artist/ composer folders and name them 'Cover' too. This doesn't have to be album art, it can be anything you choose as long as it is named 'Cover'. This will then show when you browse 'All Music' or 'Folders' in n-Stream.

There may be a more e,egant way of doing this but it works for me and is easy and elegant to use. If anyone has a better idea I'd be very interested in knowing!

Ah.

I wouldn't call that complicated but perhaps that's because its very similar to what I use. I only put album art the Album directory, though.  [And I have two copies - one called cover.jpg and the other folder.jpg - since I'm running Squeezebox and upnp/dlna and they seemed to need the different names.]

I also have a ReadyNAS (NV+), but the main difference is that  I gave up on readydlna and use Twonky instead - mainly because I couldn't get readydlna to work reliably with photos to my TV. [Its pretty configuration free, as you undoubtably know] So I tried Twonky (free trial) and it seemed better.  I've stuck to that since, for music too.  Its a bit limited but I've found it basically reliable.

So I don't know off hand what might work.  If you have another dlna client/controller (plugplayer on the MAC or ipad is what I have used, but its not freeware, I think) you could see if picks up the art - that might narrow down the problem to either readydlna or alternatively to the Naim kit/software.

Can't think of anything else, I'm afraid
