Starters Tip (NAS)

Posted by: Menx on 30 December 2010

Dear fellow Naim enthusiast….

Yes, this question may have been posted next to the million times (Suggested?)
Yet, by the look of it and to the level of my understanding, need to take the
opportunity to ask for all of your appreciated knowledge, input and experience…

Well, I have a UnitiQute since some 3 weeks.
It rules, and have so far not experienced any problems, neither disappointments
with the device… The sound, POD radio, etc is brilliant for its Spec…

Today, I use a Squeezebox Touch feeding from a USD HDD as source.
The Ripping of my CD collection into FLAC and on to HDD have really boosted the
music listening, by the core ease of access, instead of flipping covers, and feeding CD trays…
However, with a Qute on the Hifi Rack, and to make the most of it, suggest I should stream
the HDD stored music from a NAS. So far so good. The use of Ipod and N-Stream also sounds
fab and in line with elimination of numerous “remote controls”

Have checked out the list of NAIM tested (recommended?) NAS devices. Many of which still
available in stores. Now to the big deal, which I haven’t been able to figure out.
To access the NAS stored music from my Qute, do I need to have a computer up and running?
Or can it steram directly from the NAS?(Only use LapTop so that would not be good)
If using a Ipod Touch and N-Stram, can the ipod stream from a NAS also for portable use?
(When In the garden, the bedroom, garage….(depending on distance from router))

Last but final, any system (NAS) suggestion for good AUDIO play back appreciated.
(Intend to use the given NAS for audio streaming only)

Some what confused, when 28 Years old, and still not up to date with this kind of things……
Times and technology development move just to fast…… Confused

Snowy Greetings from Sweden….

I have a Buffalo Linkstation NAS and it is also a UPNP server so the computer does not need to be on for it to stream to the UniQute.

I don't fully understand your question about portable use. The n-stream app is simply a remote control for your UniQute, it doesn't stream anything itself.

hope this helps

Hi John,

Thanks Quick respons.
Maybe somewhat confusing yes.
What i meant with the IPOD and Portable, was if the Ipod Touch Can stream music from a Upnp NAS also? (Dident have much to do with the N-Stream)

n-Stream cannot be used as a UPnP portable player to stream from your NAS to your iPhone or iPod touch over Wi-Fi, but you can use PlugPlayer to accomplish this.

Plugplayer looks interesting but seems to have a few bad reviews, do you use it David?

As David mentions you can use 'PlugPlayer' on an i-pod to turn it into the so called 'media renderer' part of the system and stream music to the i-pod from your NAS as long as the wireless signal from your network is strong enough. In the garden doubtfull. It doesn't have to be mp3 either, the i-pod will accept losseless including WAV from a NAS.

You don't need a computer to be on to stream from a NAS to a Qute. You would just use a computer to rip CDs and store them on the NAS.

Sound wise, I doubt if there is any difference between any of the NASs. What is more important is the format of the music. It makes sense to use a lossless format. Flac which can be compressed is one format worth considering.

Backup is an important cnsideration. Ideally you should multiple copies of you music on different disks in different devices.
