Posted by: Wazza69 on 17 November 2010
Hi all,
I am going to start a website which lists and recommends current record stores rather the mourns the loss of lost friends. I was wondering if Forum users would like to contribute? If you would like to contribute then could you please reply with the following:
Shop Name:
Location: (as much details as you can)
Comment on type of stock: e.g. Soul specialist, 70/80s, Metal, Full range of ...
Date last visited: Will include this as a last verified date
Comments: Any comments / stories you may have which people will find interesting
If you happen to have any photos then please feel free to send them to me at waynegalloway@yahoo.com
Will start pulling it together over the next few weeks and hopefully have something online to help with the Xmas shopping!!
Any ideas for the site would also be appreciated.
Mods - Please let me know if there is any issues with this post. The purpose of the post and the site is to try and help continue the local music store industry
Many thanks,
Waz

Resident Records
28 Kensington Gdns
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4AL
01273 606 312
One of the best record stores around - up to date with all the latest "interesting" releases. Indie, electronic, jazz, rock, alt, etc etc. new release vinyl.
They know their music. Worth subscribing to the weekly newsletter.

I was in there about an hour ago, so alive and well.
Borderline

My favourite shop as it stocks a great selection of music from all genres including jazz, world, ecm, old fogey rock, vinyl galore, boxsets etc etc. Excellent shop.
In there about an hour and ten minutes ago - could have spent a fortune today as they had so much good stock.
Here is the wife trying to evict me.
Also in Brighton is Rounder Records
19 Brighton Square
Brighton, West Sussex BN1 1HD
01273 325 440
http://www.rounderbrighton.co.uk/
Indie, new releases etc
Ape Music

Sadly, I find London pretty poor for music shopping - I find Brighton much better. There is of course Rough Trade but they can be expensive and to be honest their selection whilst interesting can be weak in areas that interest me.
Rays Jazz at Foyles has the latest jazz and there is also a very good classical selection on the 3rd floor next to the jazz as well.

The stores Lontano mentioned in Brighton and Bath are really outstanding in these sad days for B&M stores.

A good selection of rock, jazz, classical and all the latest new releases in Cobham at Threshold.
http://www.elmbridge-online.co.uk/cobham/cd/
Just a little on the pricey side for my liking though.

They have a very nice selection and are very knowledgable, but as you said, a bit pricey. Good deals can be found on selected Classical or Jazz box sets - often beating out amazon.

Get yourself a copy of the book Last Shop Standing by Graham Jones. He lists loads of shops still standing at publication time - will help you track them down for your site.

Waz, so long as there's no commercial angle here and you're not poaching members for another forum then I have no issues here.... yet. I may change the title of the thread though as at first glance it looks to be breaking forum rules. Best of luck. Any extra support for small indy record shops has to be good in my view.

Anybody looking for new or used Classical or Jazz (vinyl, CD and DVD) and finding themselves in Salisbury should go and check out The Collectors Room. It's not quite the same since Edward retired and sold on the business but still one of the best around. Over the years I have probably spent more money here than on my entire system. A phone call from Edward to say he'd just taken on a serious collection would have me phoning the bank and hot-footing it over there within the hour. Ah, happy days! In fact, I reckon just my 2nd hand vinyl purchases have made up the majority of Edward's retirement fund!

Thanks Richard. No, it wont be another forum and certainly no commercial angle! I have decided to do it in blog format with the posts categorised by location. This means I can get it up and running quickly so hope to have something up and running by the end of the week
Thanks all

I would recommend Groucho's in Dundee
Just looking at my loyalty card (buy 10 get one free or something) I can see my last visit was the 10th of November.
Independent retailer of the year for the last couple of years up our way and a Dundee institution. Check out the 'Dinna ask' section of theit website.
