UK Record Store Directory: Contributions Wanted

Posted by: Wazza69 on 17 November 2010

Hi all,

I am going to start a website which lists and recommends current record stores rather the mourns the loss of lost friends. I was wondering if Forum users would like to contribute? If you would like to contribute then could you please reply with the following:

Shop Name:
Location: (as much details as you can)
Comment on type of stock: e.g. Soul specialist, 70/80s, Metal, Full range of ...
Date last visited: Will include this as a last verified date
Comments: Any comments / stories you may have which people will find interesting

If you happen to have any photos then please feel free to send them to me at waynegalloway@yahoo.com

Will start pulling it together over the next few weeks and hopefully have something online to help with the Xmas shopping!!

Any ideas for the site would also be appreciated.

Mods - Please let me know if there is any issues with this post. The purpose of the post and the site is to try and help continue the local music store industry

Many thanks,
Waz

Waz

Sorry if I am being dumb and have misread but is your list just for 'new' shops rather than s/h? or is that just too much to ask?

New: Sister Ray on Berwick St, Soho London. All types but particularly indie (not classical) with vinyl and cd.

I must admit that I originally had the used stores in mind but it makes sense to include both used and indie stores. Some are hard to separate anyway

Spent many an hour there when I was at Dundee College of Technology between 81 & 84. Amazed but really pleased it's still going. Also used to haunt Chalmers & Joy, I&N and another place at the West Port who's name escapes me. I guess they are long gone now.

Thanks for the memory

The "Outback" now in this historic building in Church Stree.

... in the shadow of the Cathedral.

This wonderful shop has been in four different buildings since the early eighties, but the standard of service, the quality and depth of the stock, and the pleasant atmosphere has remained a constant. Mainly the stock is classical, but they will order anything, and persist with difficult imports - for months sometimes - so I recommend this establishment to anyone.

There is a small Jazz section and sometimes they have some nice second hand stock as well.

A shop that seems to live in a different and kinder era, but one which does a very good trade.

ATB from George

PS: The building was once the stable of the Cathedral Organist and was last used for this purpose by GR Sinclair, who is imortalised in Elgar's Enigma Variations where his bulldog Dan is portrayed, in the variation the titled GRS.

Scott,
That would be Rockpile, sadly no longer with us,neither are the others I'm afraid. Curiously, Iain the proprietor of Rockpile was, last time I saw him doing a course at the 'Tech', you'll know where I mean Big Grin

Charlie.

Has a pretty good selection vinyl mostly Rock & Pop +some classical also sells memorabillia and cd's,S/hand only.
Have had quite few LP's from him mostly in good condition but have had one or two less good ones.
My last purchase was on Christmas eve,(Eric Clapton & the Yard birds,Live Cream and Goodbye Cream) all very good condition and I thought reasonable at £18.
As far as I know He does not have a cleaner.
