iphone advise please

Posted by: nocker on 14 January 2011

I have an iphone connected to my work computer for contacts, diary etc & have my music in itunes on my laptop.
How do I get the music onto the iphone please? Each time I plug the phone into the laptop it wipes the contacts off the phone. When I plug the phone into the works computer I get the contacts back but lose the music.
What am I doing wrong please?

You can't. An iPhone won't sync with two computers at the same time. It is a pain. Best bet is to copy your music across to your work PC and just sync with that.

If your work will let you install iTunes on your work machine, you could use a USB laptop hard drive with the tunes - just a matter of telling iTunes where to look.

As for putting Contacts on your laptop - the method will depend on what program your work PC uses to do this. All Contacts type programs that I've come across will allow you to export the data.

Can't you just select to manually manage music on the iPhone, then you can just drop and drag the music files. That's how I do it with my iPod between various Macs. Can't you then just use your work computer for contacts and then manage the music separately at home?

That said, don't you need iTunes on the work machine to sync contacts in the first place.

No, sorry, not seeing the problem.

When you sync to the PC you deselect syncing to your Contacts. When you connect to the work laptop deselect syncing your music. iTunes can be authorised for more than one machine and this is one of the handy reasons why. Also move your Contacts onto a USB stick, maybe your music too. You have a backup and iTunes can be directed Howard the relevant folder should any accidents occur.

Choose to manually manage music and create playlists of the music you want copied and make sure those playlists are ticked in the music bit on the iphone screen.
