Damaged HD data recovery?
Posted by: Paper Plane on 03 January 2011
I've just had the HD replaced in this MacBook as the last one went t*ts-up.
However, the heads on the old one are damaged and the repairers were not able to recover the data on it. ( Don't say back-ups or Time Machine as I hadn't backed-up and the old MacOs didn't have Time Machine. Yes I know...)
My query is, does anyone know of a service in the UK who might be able get the stuff back at a sensible price?
Thanks
steve

If it's ok with you, I can post your query on another forum wot I frequent. There are some true geeks there, at least one in a data recovery business.

Hi Steve,
Use Data Clinic at dataclinic.co.uk. I have used them twice and they come very highly recomended. They'll trandfer the data disc itself to another reader to lift the information, so don't need the heads to work on your hd. Their succes rate is impressive and won't charge if they are unsuccessful (which they won't be in my opinion).
Best of luck.

Tony - Appreciated. Many thanks for that and please do.
Dave - I'll investigate them. Again, thanks.

Steve,
I've asked the question on the other forum, just in case the above doesn't work out. All the best and fingers crossed for you.

Do you know what sort of damage there is to the heads? I reckon there's a fair chance damaged heads would have damaged the disk as the tolerances in there are so fine and the rotational speed so high. If the disk is ok it will have to be rehoused and this has to be done in sterile lab conditions as even a particle of dust in there could cause irreparable damage. It all tends to mean big bucks. We investigated several years ago and the cost was in the high hundreds, perhaps even thousands. It's a long time ago but we declined the offer as we had decent backups.
Have you tried Google? "hard drive data recovery" produced no end of possibilities but a personal recommendation is always preferable.
I'll be very interested in the outcome.

I've always used
OnTrack. They're not cheap, but they have successfully recovered a number of drives for the business I work for in the past.
Note: As per Tom's comments, the chances of recovery following a head failure are extremely slim.
