Cataldo < > The Old Believers

Hi Jeff,
What are they like?

The Old Believers Mark are one for the future not sure how Jeff feels about them but of the two discs I have heard from me they are still trying to define their sound yet. The girl has an excellent voice.

Cataldo I personally just never liked anything I have heard from them. The album Jeff has listened has a couple of good trax.

Mark and Ewen
I am in general aggrement with Ewen, and your live experience Mark.

After only one listen, The Cataldo was decent, competent, pleasant and enjoyable, but will need some more listens to determine how often it returns to the playlist. Sounds like Eric mostly solo acoustic. Doesn't stand out from the crowd of music available but generally enjoyable.

The Old Believers have potential. It is my understanding they are very young, still in their teens ? The female voice is very good, the male voice is acceptable but I think the inexperience shows here as he seems to not know what usage would work best in a given situation. The songs are decent though hopefully will develop further with more experience. Raw talent at this point, unfocused and trying to find its way, as Ewen said. But may be worth keeping an eye, and ear, on.

Will be playing it some more (both on same cd-r) over the next few days.

Made me think of the singer from Crash Test Dummies as well. After repeated listens I have acquired a taste for the voice and the songs, not sure about the production, but then I am listening low-rez so it might not be as obvious.

The contributor/ producer here I think is Mike Hecht who also works with Agnes Milewski who I have been enjoying. Not finding anything from Hecht on his own.

These folks are all based in Vienna.

This rightfully made J.N.'s list of worst-sounding releases, but hopefully people are getting around that, because it is wonderful musically, IMO. The guitar playing (Bryston ?) is simply amazing. Listen on a boom box if necessary, but, listen - musically, this deserves spin-time occasionally.

PS Lontano, it is genuinely nice to see you enjoying your music on vinyl. To me in my life jazz and vinyl are inseperable.

My first exposure to Carla. I was expecting more of a full on big band sound, but I'm very pleased with what I hear, which is more like a "large ensemble". One great tune after another too. Any other Carla Bley recommendations?
