Claude,

I really like her delicate and fluid touch with the piano keys. This wonderful recording of hers (recommended by Stefan) is one of my favorite Haydn albums:

I am planning on getting her Handel Suites and Brahms Variations discs as well.

This is the only Kovacevich recording i have (i think) and owned since i purchased it in the mid 90's and like it a lot.
Kovacevich plays very well imho albeit with a piano slightly too distant for my taste. The orchestration is okay, quite eager at the start, and explosive at times but with nice use of a solo clarinet and oboe solo here and there. I like Sir Colin.
But not really a top notch recording job, good to own but not worth paying lots of money for.

I would like to buy something of his solo work, thinking about the LvB 3 x cd set on EMI which is very affordable at £8.49 on HMV …but is this good?

What do you recommend ?

Regards

Yes it's good - the complete cycle is IMO the best thing he has ever done.

(The sound quality is controversial. EMI did not give him the most sympathetic sound, but the recordings accurately capture the steely sound of the huge Steinway that K. used throughout the recording sessions - I think. Others disagreed, and in the end, Kovacevich recorded Op.26 and Op.111 twice. Only the later recordings made it to the complete set).

Other bargains could be the Philips Duos on which he is represented with Beethoven and Brahms, on recordings from the 70s and 80s.
