Good Morning Debs,

If you are a Shostakovich Quartets enthusiast, I would recommend the Fitzwilliam set on Decca. It is available on CD but if you listen to vinyl well worth trying to locate a copy. Apart from the excellent playing, the recording quality is superb.

Hi Karl,

thanks for that, i will investigate!

I'm thinking ~ the Borodin Quartet are rather brilliant imho, could there really be something even better? Smile

I have not heard the Borodin’s so cannot say although I’m aware that those in the know speak highly of their interpretation.

I’ve recently bought one of the Hyperion discs of the quartets played by the St Petersburg String Quartet (No 5, 7 and 9 ) and have really enjoyed this. Well worth investigating particularly as Hyperion often have the discs on special offer (Hyperion Current Offers )

I'm digging out some old "classics"?? Big Grin

On CD:-

Oh dear! Sounds like a waste of £5.99. I think too much influence from the awful FZ. A school orchestra on their first day would sound better than this.

What's the brief, hey guys go into the studio and ALL play something different at the same time.

This warrants 5* on AMG???

Wonderful record - Fast n' bulbous

As everybody knows the Captain is making a reference to Dr. Fester’s pet when he sings A squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast ‘n’ bulbous, got me?.

No thanks I'll stick to music.

Life's too short, onto something else, on vinyl:-

This is the most difficult Beefheart record to start with - it is for the dedicated fan - Safe As Milk or Clear Spot are a good place to start.

Fair enough -

The Captain wasn't happy with Blue Jeans & Moonbeams (though it is not bad); Doc At The Radar Station is superb IMHO - one of his finest: do you like it?

With TMR, most folk hate it on first listen, on second listen they see odd bits of promise, on third they say its not bad, on fourth they say it is rather good, on fifth they say it's a fine album, on sixth they say great record and on seventh they say it's the best album ever.

I think it is called the concept of seventh heaven or perhaps it is just the Dust Blows Forward 'n the Dust Blows Back.

Interestingly - although at times TMR sounds chaotic, the magic band could play it note perfect at concerts - musically they were quite amazing. Whether you like the result is a matter of taste.
