Finishing up another Sonata set with Vol 9 from Garrick Ohlsson. I was very satisfied with this set and heard some very fine playing here.

Currently, heading into a single Beethoven disc from Vassily Primakov, another exceptional pianist whom I like very much.

A little nostalgia...

From the above EP, with a little help from Andy Weatherall, this is Primal Scream's 'Screamadelica'.

Does anyone happen to know why this brilliant track didn't appear on the album of the same name? (I don't.)

The official story is that they were so wasted during the original recording sessions they forgot that they had recorded a title track for the album, it was only when Pickles the dog found the lost tapes under a stack or Tenants cans and old rolled up fifties they released the EP. True story Smile.

Hi EJ,
Absolutely! Two exceptional musicians playing great music. By the way, do you prefer the Franck Sonata as a Violin Sonata or a Cello Sonata?

Regards,
Doug

Good Morning Debs,

If you are a Shostakovich Quartets enthusiast, I would recommend the Fitzwilliam set on Decca. It is available on CD but if you listen to vinyl well worth trying to locate a copy. Apart from the excellent playing, the recording quality is superb.

Karl
Hi Karl,

thanks for that, i will investigate!

I'm thinking ~ the Borodin Quartet are rather brilliant imho, could there really be something even better? Smile

Debs

I have not heard the Borodin’s so cannot say although I’m aware that those in the know speak highly of their interpretation.

I’ve recently bought one of the Hyperion discs of the quartets played by the St Petersburg String Quartet (No 5, 7 and 9 ) and have really enjoyed this. Well worth investigating particularly as Hyperion often have the discs on special offer (Hyperion Current Offers )

Karl
Thanks for the links, Karl.

Presently i only have one Hyperion cd of the St.Petersburg String Quartet...
no.1, Piano Quintet (with Igor Uryash), and Piano Trio no.2
and which imho is highly recommendable too, so i wouldn't mind collecting more of these.

Also, this turned up in the post today...

My first listen to Kyrill Rodin (cello) but as i rush around getting ready to go out to work : (

Doug, I've never heard it with cello. I've heard other performances of the violin sonata, and this has easily become my favorite version.
