Tracey Thorn - Free download details...
Tracey's free Christmas stocking. As a thank you for all the love and attention paid to her album this year, 'Love And Its Opposite', Tracey shins down the chimney to deliver a FREE downloadable Christmas stocking to warm your winter fireside.
Inside, and yours to keep, you'll find a brand new cover version of Sufjan Stevens' seasonal classic, 'Sister Winter' recorded in Berlin with producer Ewan Pearson, plus a filmed live-at-home performance of 'Singles Bar' (from her current album 'Love And Its Opposite') featuring Ewan on keyboards and Tracey's partner, Ben Watt on electric guitar. In addition there is a personal photo of Tracey snapped by Ben in Brooklyn during her promo trip to New York in April this year.

After seeing Denis's Tracey Thorn freebie, something I've just remembered seeing earlier:
Gorillaz have announced the tracklist of new album The Fall, which is to be given away free on Christmas Day to the band’s fan club members.
More details if you click on the picture above. I haven't even heard their last album, but I thought a few folk here might be interested in this.

Good, isn't it?
Cheers,
EJ
Hi EJ,
Absolutely! Two exceptional musicians playing great music. By the way, do you prefer the Franck Sonata as a Violin Sonata or a Cello Sonata?
Regards,
Doug
Doug, I've never heard it with cello. I've heard other performances of the violin sonata, and this has easily become my favorite version.
EJ
Played as a violin sonata, it is indeed probably the most common way of hearing it. The Repin/Lugansky team is hard to beat.
I don't have time to dig through all my CD's now to find all the options but off the top of my head I would quickly like to suggest the following recordings of it as a Cello Sonata:
Daniel Barenboim, Jacqueline Du Pré
Jean Fonda, Pierre Fournier
Alfred Cortot, Pablo Casals
Martha Argerich, Mischa Maisky
Stephen Hough, Steven Isserlis
Robert Kulek, Daniel Müller-Schott
I'm biased so by saying I prefer the Cello only represents my leaning. In general, I feel it makes a richer reading with the cello. The cello's voicing is that much closer to that of a human voice and this is main attraction for me. The piece was written firmly in the Romantic era and is all about blood, sweat and tears. Actually, the story goes that this piece is really autobiographical and about a devout, married man (Faure) who is wrestling with the idea (temptation) of pursuing a beautiful, young student of his. I'm learning this piece at the moment (thus the literal blood, sweat and tears for me) and the writing is very obvious and filled with symbolism pointing in this direction (the questions/doubt, the pursuit, the ecstacy, the joy etc. It is just a fantastic piece overall though, whether played by violin or cello.
Regards,
Doug
