LEONARD BERNSTEIN:WEST SIDE STORY

Although I already had this one CD and vinyl, the arrival of '111 Years of Deutsche Grammophon' got me back into a recording that I hadn't played for some years.

Although some have criticised this recording for being too operatic, the quality of Bernstein's direction, particularly with the orchestra, shines through. There are some magnificent songs in this musical and I believe that it outshines even the great works of Rogers and Hammerstein. I wish that Sondheim's original libretto for 'Gee Officer Krupke' had been retained. It would have made the ending so amusing ... What ever does 'Krup you' mean? As you may have guessed, I am wholly opposed to any form of censorship in music!

I've just ordered a copy of the Special Edition set. That means I get another CD of the recording but it also includes the DVD documenting the recording itself. It was broacast on television many years ago and I've wanted to see it again, if only to see Bernstein giving Carreras a music lesson!

I have that WSS on vinyl and very lovely it is too - must dig it out for a 2010 playing.

... now playing

The mastering is just outstanding. The 35DP still eludes me but so far this is the absolute sound.

Yep got that too - love it, not a filler track on the whole CD.

New Order - The Perfect Kiss 12"

One of a brace of New Order 12"s I picked up yesterday. Not entirely sold on the ultra-minimalist cover art though - inspired or just lazy, you decide.

With just about everyone going on about Porcupine Tree at the moment, I thought it was time I had a listen. It's a bit different to the only other PT stuff I've got (Voyage 34 Part 1 and 2), and it's dead good, although it sounds uncannily like Dream Theatre.

Anyone else feel really, really old every time they go into HMV?

Alas, I agree.

I swear some of the younger staff think I can't possibly know how to work a cd.

Or if I buy something not twenty plus years old they smile condescendingly as if I'm trying to join da yoof.

I usually don't stay long enough to buy anything, on account of the music they play, oh and their prices!

Jagjaguwar (Records) 2007

Okkervil River are one of music best kept secrets imho.

On vinyl, provenance unknown, needs a clean. Still sounds good though.

I have cracked this problem. I have a totally gorgeous young lady who works at the gallery on Saturdays. I just send her in with a list and the cash. The HMV sales staff (male and female) usually fall all over her and when she asks for uncool stuff for me they just nod and murmur "cool"... Big Grin
