The For Carnation

The For Carnation

The seeds for The For Carnation were sown in Louisville, Kentucky circa ’97. There, improvising and collaboration between Britt Walford and vocalist/keyboardist Brian McMahan, bassist Todd Cook (Shipping News) and guitarist Michael McMahan, led to the development of a uniquely dynamic, minimalist-informed, yet R&B-inspired music clearly distinguishable from previously related group efforts (i.e; Slint.) Rehearsal tapes made during this period provided the resulting core group (Cook and the McMahan brothers) with a significant body of rough material- work that would, over time, suggest a distinct evolution in the efforts of the TFC collective.

The results of their work, a self-titled 6-song, 45 minute release, was finished in Chicago in '99 with the help of producer John McEntire. With Bobb Bruno (guitar, sampler, keyboards), and Steve Goodfriend (drums), the new five-piece took up where the original group had left off, allowing jams to incubate and take shape as fully realized songs.

The band had previously recorded two EPs, Marshmallows and Fight Songs,
which were released on Matador. They were combined into Promised Works,
and released on Touch and Go in July 2007.

Nigel - I have been looking at this one for months and never quite got to buying it. Glad now that I did though. Hard to describe but I'll give it go - modern day abstract jazz influenced harpsicord music with a dash of Philip Glass! Definitely not an easy listen and certainly not something I would try and recommend to anyone unless they wanted to try. Going to play again tomorrow in the car - think it will be good to listen to whilst driving around.

Cheers

All on vinyl...

Never remember the name of all but two tracks but never get bored of listening to this slice of magic.

Pink Moon was the track that hooked me when I first listened to Nick Drake many years ago. The guitar playing on this is fabulous.

This ain't bad either.

It grew on me. I really admire Wollny for trying to do something different with this album, and his work with Kruse and Schaeffer in the [em] trio, which I see you're also listening to. I'd also recommend his solo piano CD, Hexentanz, if you haven't already got it.

I'm relaxing to this EP from The Innocence Mission:

If a song more beautiful than "Pioneering" has been written, I'd like to hear it.

Nigel

Zbigniew Preisner has composed some wonderful soundtracks particularly for films by Krysztof Kieslowski. This wonderful film starring the gorgeous Irene Jacob is no exception. Beautiful music.

This is an old favourite album of mine.

This is a recording of a concert by Zbigniew Preisner and Orchestre Sinfonia Varsovia at the church of Wieliczka, situated in an old salt mine 130 metres below ground.

Presiner decided that his soundtrack music should be heard in concert without film and this is the recording. A resounding success and it just shows what wonderfully beautiful music he composed - the result is breathtaking.

I think he wrote the music for three colours blue before the film was actually made, too. Same director of course. The music in the final scenes was stunning, but throughout also.

If you like "Blue" then I highly recommend this album. Some of Blue is on this recording but there are so many other stunning melodies here from his many other soundtracks. This is a great night time album.

As you say the soundtrack to Blue is so good and it is another wonderful film. Juliette!

You need a paying member to invite you, as I found out trying to invite my son.
