Gary Numan and Little Boots, 7 Dec 2009 on 6 Music

Good performances, with Gary showing he's still got it. Are 'Friends' Electric? is ace Cool

This kind of session could go mainstream BBC TV and easily replace the tired 'Jools'. Check out the other collaborations and sessions.

New Rhodes - Everybody Loves A Scene

My first on blu-spec. Don't have the ordinary CD for comparison, but amazed how varied (and great) the tunes are. Never really listened to much of theirs before.

Your command is my wish, Stefan! But I must see how much it's going to cost to fix my leaky combi-boiler before I spend any more money on music...

When I see an opportunity to see what the kids are doing nowadays with Beethoven's c- Variations, I will take the opportunity to listen. This is a nice little recital and for the most part I was quite pleased with this disc. Wilhelm Kempff is still my point of reference for the Beethoven and in my mind has yet to be bettered. Despite glaring differences (a good thing), Ursuleasa presents a strong and compelling take with many solid and interesting ideas.

Thanks, Stefan, I am O.K.. I was just trying to get into a Super Bowl spirit and miserably failed. I don't think that I am going to watch it today.

What I need is a couple of hours in the fresh air and I am just waiting for the snow to taper off.

Enjoy your Sunday,

Haim

I can never listen to enough Rachmaninov...(especially if it includes the Variations on a Theme of Chopin!)

Doug,

My newest Chopin is the old Etudes recording (1972) of Pollini:

And how is Sudbin's Rachmaninov? I really like his Scriabin and Scarlatti discs.

Haim, nice!

For pianists, it doesn't really much better than with sets like the Etudes. I look for recordings by anyone who has ever recorded them.

For a little diversion, I know you have Hamelin's Godowsky transcriptions. If you like the Godowsky, I'd also recommend you try Boris Berezovsky's single disc.

It is a really neat comparison of some of them back to back. Plus you get a nice transcription of the Minute Valse (which I'm currently trying to find the score to).

I only received these Sudbin disc's this week so I have only had one listen each (plus the Tchaikovsky Concerto disc).

I enjoyed them all, however, I only am saying this from an overall perspective at this point. I need a few more listens to mine out the details.

He did a really good job with the Sonata (a version based on Horowitz) as with the Chopin variations. I just love the first 10 variations and this morning I'm going to do a serious comparison against some other recordings. I can't help thinking that Nikolai Lugansky really is a strong contender here. It's funny how I can listen to a 25 minute piece and to me it is all about 30 seconds or a 2 minute section somewhere in the middle. The fourth variation is just such a moment for me (combined with the theme and first three). The tension and unresolved fighting within is just so beautiful. I mean it is primal and even crude (listen to those low C's and G's on a Steinway!) in a fight with transcendent aspirations (the consistent, rhythmic, melodic drive upwards). It's so wonderful....

If you liked the Scarlatti and Scriabin then this is a no brainer, get this one too (as well as some of the concerto recordings)
