I find both, the German and the JPN target outstanding - the German target is still pretty affordable.

Perhaps we can bake them off with the Rhino soon?

Joe.

That's the completist side of me Smile

Actually, I am enjoying her very much. "If you like" references on CDBaby are Tori Amos, Natalie Merchant and Alanis Morissette. But what got me interested in her to begin with is her backing vocals on Bill Deasy's newest disc.

I love these simple independent artists, modest production, decent or better songwriting and some very very talented musicians that work together in a community to support each other and continue "new" music.

For me also, I can enjoy these artists in small intimate clubs or a theatre, small crowds, interaction with the artist, etc.

Listen here.

Jefferson Airplane - Long John Silver, Grunt Records. 1972

quote:
The original Airplane's final studio effort will go down inhistory as a victim of circumstance. By the time it was made in 1972 vocalist Marty Balin was long gone, and with the emergence of Paul Kantner and Grace Slick as the predominant power center of the group, the creative role of Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady had diminished. Thus, band morale was generally low, as were public expectations, and ultimately the album was roundly dismissed by band and public alike.
Hindsight shows this to be a grievous error. LONG JOHN SILVER found the Airplane solidifying their spacey folk-rock sound. There was less psychedelic abandon, but it was replaced by sturdy song structures and more focused arrangements. On the title track and elsewhere, Jorma still wails in his unique way, and Papa John Creach's fiddle enlivens "Milk Train", butthe real stars of this album are the songs, which are uniformly strong. The feel here is somewhat statelier, more deliberate and thoughtful, but LONG JOHN SILVER still gives off an agreeably earthy feel.

quote:
Mavis Staple's 2007 album, WE'LL NEVER TURN BACK is a stunning achievement from one of soul and gospel's most revered singers. Produced by Ry Cooder, the album is built around freedom songs of the civil rights movement--some are traditional ("Eyes on the Prize"), some are appropriated for the theme("99 and 1/2"), while others are originals ("I'll Be Rested"). As much a celebration of hard-won freedom as a reminder of past and current injustices, the album features stirring gospel choir vocals from both Ladysmith Black Mombazo and original members of the SNCC Freedom Singers. Yet the album isfirst and foremost a platform for Mavis Staples's stirring voice, one that is as much a liberating force as any protest. Cooder, to his credit, keeps things appropriately raw and immediate, and the band always positions Staples at the front of the line. As deeply moving as any album made in 2007, WE'LL NEVER TURN BACK is at once a call to arms, a new cadence for a new march, and the celebratory soundtrack for the jubilee on the other side of the mountain.

I may have mentioned this album before..?
