Fifth album from the American experimental rockers, their follow-up to 2007's self-titled effort, which combined a new metallic brutalism with the punk tempos of their debut and the art-rock of the following two records. On this release the heavy punkiness remains, but it also has almost a dance feel on some tracks, and a host of new sounds are present, including massively overdriven synth bass and ghostly choral vocals.

Released uk 8/3/10

I suspect that my next few choices will be prompted by Ewemon's posts...

quote:
The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael Bloomfield's lead guitar is stinging and eloquent, and the rhythm section, on loan from Howling Wolf, swings like mad. The only fly in the ointment is the fairly primitive production, which often makes Mark Naftalin's keyboards sound like a horde of angry bees, but that's a small criticism in theface of blues playing as passionate and accomplished as this. A genuine classic.

I suspect that it is underqualified for that.

The more I hear this, the more I like it. At times a bit "intellectual", but always something to discover, to dive into. A long time grower, and a proof that there is life beyond KJ and others.

While thisis their second album overseen by Metallica producer Bob Rock, WE ARE THE SAME actually sounds rather mellow in contrast to early efforts like UP TO HERE. Needless to say, Gordon Downie's distinctive vocal quaver is still the dominant element, floating atop a rootsy mix of acoustic and electric guitars and a folk-rock feel that allows the band's thoughtful, melodic compositions to unfold in a way that feels natural and graceful.

My favourite disc of there's is Road Apples.

He's the lead singer in Too Slim and the Tail Draggers who would you believe it have put out 15 albums. This is his first solo if my memory serves me well as I think there are another 2 after this. His name is Too Slim Langford. I borrowed it from a friend but might just buy a copy it's not bad.

'Antony And The Johnsons' is the eponymous debut album from the unconventional New York-based combo. With their unique appearance and a sound steeped in bluesy, torchlit noir, the band have created an album that is as endearing as it is avant-garde. Includes the tracks 'Twilight' and 'Hitler In My Heart'.

Still for me one of those rare albums that when you stumble across it, it just gets under your skin for life.
