Miles Davis - Kind of Blue.
Being someone who is just starting out... does anyone have any thoughts on where I should go after KoB? Thankyou - I'm sure there is a huge amount of Jazz out their that I will love but I just don't understand (yet) contemporary stuff.
Cheers,
Robert
Jazz means different things to different people. A lot of people like the old school of jazz in which Kind of Blue is the pinnacle, IMHO. You should explore that area as there is a lot of fine music there. But my favourite jazz comes from more recent times and this thread is well worth reading to get some ideas for exploration.

Shearwater - The Golden Archipelago
Beautiful gatefold vinyl & a good quiet recording. A strange first listen, as I don't have any music like this at all. Judging by the reviews here, another few listens should open things up. I like musical mystery tours

For reference - MySpace & a wonderful NPR Tiny Desk Concert

The great man on the vinyl released by Sundazed last year - a great pressing of a great LP. And of course contains the track Famous Blue Raincoat which I saw him sing live in Glasgow - just a few rows back from the stage. Fantastic.

Got it when it released Denis, on vinyl, but thanks all the same. I have his first album thats very different than his guitar stuff. He also goes under the name Sideshow for a more dancey sound if you fancy a bit of that.

You've always been a leader of the pack Dean

Dancey & Denis have never appeared in any complements bestowed upon me and never will

I wouldn't risk it, with any biscuit he offered me!

You've always been a leader of the pack DeanThe CD is an excellent pressing and easily the best album I've purchased this year. If the vinyl is good, I'm sure the bassline of the track 'So Long' shifts some air.

Told you all. In descending order of wonderfullness :

On CD:-
Sounds more like a collection of cutting room bits the more I hear it, it seems unfinished somehow.
Now, disc2 (Studio) :-
