Hi Lontano,

Have you developed an opinion on this album yet? I haven't heard it (I can only find 3 tracks on Spotify), but do enjoy Sigur Ros and have been a bit disappointed that they appear to be fragmenting into solo projects.

I liked it on first listen in the car. Do not yet know if it is a classic or not but let's see how it goes this week. There was a good review I read today in uncut.

Cheers

New one on me. Just read a good review and listened to a few snippets. Let me know if it is a good un. Pirouet is a good label.

I gave it two spins this afternoon and enjoyed it very much, second time around. Not straight-ahead swinging/rhythmic jazz, but very engaging. Vaguely reminiscent of [em] trio, but nowhere near as difficult, and with more melodic hooks. I recommend it.

Good review in the Sunday Times

From The Sunday Times April 4, 2010

Jonsi: GoMark Edwards
Recommend? (2)

Over the years, we have been told, variously, that happiness is a warm puppy, a warm gun, a journey not a destination, even a cigar called Hamlet. Based on the nine songs on Go, we now need to add to that list: happiness is a solo record by an Icelandic singer whose bandmates have all disappeared on paternity leave. That’s the official excuse, anyway, for Sigur Ros abandoning their last album and taking an indefinite sabbatical. Yet might paternity leave be a convenient euphemism for “musical differences”? The question is worth asking, because Go is certainly musically different — and emotionally very different, replacing the abiding sense of melancholy you get from Sigur Ros albums with a child-like joyousness that dares you not to break out in a huge grin. , such as Grow Till Tall, find their way to a blissful conclusion. The classical composer Nico Muhly (who has previously worked with Grizzly Bear and Antony and the Johnsons) adds over-the-top orchestrations that suit the buoyant mood perfectly. The other significant difference between this and Sigur Ros’s catalogue is that Jonsi, for the most part, abandons his made-up “Hopelandic” language and sings in English, so that instead of hearing a lot of meaningless elongated vowels, we can start to pick out a message. It’s as relentlessly upbeat as most of the music: life is short, Jonsi is telling us, so enjoy it. And if you’re looking to enjoy yourself, Go is a good place to start.

One of my favourite Keith Jarrett albums. Just superb. This is a very expensive record for me as I saw a vinyl copy of it in a shop in Sydney two years ago, bought it and it kicked off a big vinyl binge and eventual TT purchase. If I had not seen it that day I doubt that I would have started into vinyl again. Weird.

Released in 1989, 10 years after it was recorded, PERSONAL MOUNTAINS is a set by Keith Jarrett's so-called "European Quartet." It's a live performance in Tokyo, one week prior to the engagement at New York City's Village Vanguard that resulted in the NUDE ANTS album. What's remarkable about both of these releases is how they showcase the power of this ensemble, only briefly glimpsed on the studio albums (as with the wonderful pair, BELONGING and MY SONG).

There has always been a folk-like bearing to the quartet's sound, and their studio work underscores this with concise pieces. However, live they stretch out, creating organically changing landscapes which are by turns emotionally compelling, spiritually resonant, and rich with surprise and invention. The aptly titled 15-minute "Personal Mountains," captures the feel of the Scandinavian homeland of Jarrett's cohorts.

Recorded live in Tokyo, Japan in April 1979.

Personnel: Keith Jarrett (piano, percussion); Jan Garbarek (soprano & tenor saxophones); Palle Danielsson (acoustic bass); Jon Christensen (drums).

Cool as you come Drum 'n' Bass from the Saarf London massive with Lianne Carroll on Vocals.

Great album Dean. Have you got these two? Both equally as good.

The "dodgy cogger" on the front might be your dealer but is also the brains behind London Elektricity, Tony Colman. Very clever chap Smile

Stu I bought it a couple of years ago. Limited edition. I would not get too excited about it but it is alright. Looks like an ebay job these days.

It took a lot of months and a live gig for it to grow on me when it came out. but it stands as there best album now and i dont think it will be bettered now? unless Steve slows down and just does one band every four to six years.

Stu - I think you are right and the new live DVD will confirm it as well as this tour was a lot better than The Incident (still looking forward to seeing their big show at the RAH in October though).

First to be played after I've been away for the weekend:

Nightwish: Highest Hopes

This best of is a delight and I can already feel the need to give my Nightwish (incomplete) collection a spin again Smile What a great follower to the recent and very pleasant Opeth refresh.
