An underrated singer song writer IMO.
His vocals have been described as somewhere between Dylan, a dirt road and grit in a chainsaw.![]()
Totally agree with you. I have everything he has done and they are all great discs.

In fact, anyone who likes Beethoven should not be without the complete Violin Sonatas, complete Cello Sonatas and the Piano Trios (in addition to the usual 9 Symphonies, 5 Piano Concertos, Choral Fantasy and the 32 Piano Sonatas plus the Variations). I just love spending your money!
You forgot his string Quartets, maybe his most important group of works besides the Symphonies and the piano Sonatas.

Kings of Convenience - Riot On An Empty Street

"Hersch convened this trio for two days of recording and a standing-room-only gig at New York’s Knitting Factory’s July ’95 festival. According to Hersch, “The nice thing about playing with Michael and Gerry is there are no limits.” The trio deftly balances chamber music delicacy with casual but intense swing. Thirteen Ways is the trio’s magnum opus. It’s made up of loose improvisations on each of thirteen poems by Wallace Stevens.
Think of Wallace Stevens as a spiritual kin... A high degree of order, yet a fascination with chaos... "

pe-zulu, you are absolutely correct. How could I forget such an important genre?
Too many things to list so it would have been best to leave it at "you need to get a complete set of Beethoven (eventually)."

Denis,
Right probably the best place to start is...
Violator - 1990

Now this is smack bang in the middle of their catalogue released in 1990, if you go back in time you obviously hit more of the poppy stuff, the newer stuff keeps the same feels as Violator but they experiment with guitars and other instruments. My favorite albums personally are......
Exciter - 2001

Exciter is quite dance music orientated in parts but its still thoughtful and song based so don't be alarmed.
Black Celebration - 1986

Black Celebration is where the Mode get serious and start building real albums rather than a collection of singles.
But being a BIG Mode fan they are all crackers especially the latest one...
Sounds Of The Universe - 2009

They go back to a more 80's analogue synth feel but in a much more mature way than their early albums.

Not his best by any means, but has its moments in an 80's type way, on the black stuff again..
