Talk about 'six degrees of seperation'. My new found love for all things ECM has prompted me to investigate some more Euro jazz from various places including Norway which brought me to Trygve Seim who has recorded for...ECM!

Gordon, there is so much good euro jazz out there. I have loads of it here Smile Trygve Seim is sometimes a bit of a challenge for me.

14. A Change Of Heart

This is actually my favorite pop-rock song of all times.
Poul,

I've too many actual favourites to mention here, but i used to have a copy of his 2nd album Night Owl, (perhaps this appealed to my night-shift nature?) i don't know but it's an album that i ought to get again (on vinyl).
I will never understand why Baker Street did not get a no.1 slot, either UK or US side, it still gets played a lot on radio these days and wherever i hear it the opening bars always send me into a state of delirium, a very strange and special song that.

Yes they are - most of his music is commissions for film soundtracks, except for the odd opera, concerto and symphony.

I really enjoyed this album Adrian. I was probably in the mood something with a bit of character but I do see that on some occasions I probably would not be up for listening to this.

Have you played it recently?

Not played in a while. Will give him a spin soon plus some of his others albums such as Sangam.

I've got a love-hate relationship with Philip Glass. I can't help feeling cheated and manipulated: the music is so formulaic (once you've heard some, you've heard it all). Yet simultaneously it's so effective, and on occassion, quite moving. We even had a Philip Glass organ piece played at our wedding (Mad Rush).

If you're feeling a little more daring, might I recommend:

[ Philip Glass - Einstein on the beach ]
Like some of his earlier works, e.g. music in twelve parts, the repetitions can be aggressively incessant, but I love it for its eccentricity and creative single-mindedness. Dazzlingly original, but you've got to be in the right mood.

I apologise because I can't remember who brought this to my attention but thank you.

quote:
Stunning new album from Anais Mitchell features contributions from Ani Di Franco, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver, The Haden Triplets, Greg Brown, and Ben Knox Miller of the Low Anthem.

Based upon the ancient Greek myth of the poet Orpheus and his doomed quest to rescue his wife Eurydice from the underworld, Anaïs Mitchell's new album Hadestown evokes our Depression-era past, the current financial disaster (though it was written before the stock market collapse), and a post-apocalyptic future.

Anaïs, who sings the part of Eurydice, the character whose (metaphoric) death propels Orpheus into "Hadestown" is joined by a veritable Who's Who of modern indie folk/rock on the release. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver plays Orpheus; Greg Brown is Hades, Lord of the Underworld ("king of the kingdom of dirt"); Ani DiFranco plays Hades' strong-willed, subversive wife, Persephone; the Haden Triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya) are the Greek chorus-like Fates and Ben Knox Miller of The Low Anthem is the messenger Hermes. Together, they create a world where people hide behind walls in a misguided attempt to preserve their "freedom" and protect their riches.

Out on cd in a couple of weeks I think.

It has a very 1920's camp show tune sound and is all the better for it imho.

An interesting observation Nathaniel and at the risk of Reductio ad absurdum I could argue that some of my favorite music is (in a very broad sense) formuliac?
