Whats it like??
Stu
I like what I have heard so far - quite a lot to take in. It's on spotify to try.
My impression of it before I had to give the copy I got a loan of back last week was that's it's very ecclectic Stu/Adrian. To me some of the styles she covers just don't suit her voice. But hey that's just my personal opinion.
Think it would have made a vg single album.
I wasn't sure how often would I pull it out to listen to it.
No doubting it is a good album. But I think I may leave this for the moment.

I love the cover:
And if everyone keeps saying how brilliant it is, I may be forced to buy it!

It is one of my favourite ECM covers. I would not hang about as it is Out of Print and going up in price. Find it quick!

While Protection and Mezzanine are both great records, Blue Lines is my favourite album, so had to put it on myself.
I saw Heligoland in Sainsbury's recently with the fairly limited different coloured covers (... and I still didn't buy it!)

Neither guitarist John Abercrombie nor producer Manfred Eicher's ECM label are often thought of in connection with dissonant, almost aggressive music, which makes the powerful OPEN LAND that much more of a surprise. Moving away from the guitar/synthesizer experiments Abercrombie favored in the early '90s towards a more traditional electric guitar tone, his playing here is at times fierce and never less than dazzling. With nine tracks in just under 65 minutes, the song structures of OPEN LAND are a bit more compact than Abercrombie usually favors; his solos are consequently more streamlined and intense. The full-band arrangements, featuring violin, tenor sax, organ, flugelhorn, trumpet, and drums are as interesting as that lineup suggests. The opening "Just Tune In" dazzles, and that high standard is maintained throughout, especially on the centerpiece "Free Piece Suit(e)."
Recorded at Avatar Studio, New York, New York in September 1998.
Personnel: John Abercrombie (guitar); Mark Feldman (violin); Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Kenny Wheeler (trumpet, flugelhorn); Dan Wall (organ); Adam Nussbaum (drums, percussion).
