Jaga Jazzist (also known as Jaga) is an experimental jazz band from Norway that rose to prominence when the BBC named their first album, A Livingroom Hush (Smalltown Supersound/Ninja Tune), the best jazz album of 2002. The core of the band are brothers and main songwriters Lars and Martin Horntveth. Martin formed Jaga Jazzist together with Ivar Christian Johansen in 1994 while they still were in their teens, though Johansen later left the group. They are also prominent figures of the Norwegian pop act The National Bank.
The band features trumpets, trombone, electric guitar, bass, tuba, bass clarinets, Fender Rhodes, vibraphone and a rack of electronics, as well as strong melodies and rhythms. Talk Talk, Soft Machine, John Coltrane, Don Cherry, Aphex Twin, Stereolab, Squarepusher and Tortoise are frequently mentioned as sources of inspiration. Jaga Jazzist is widely considered to be one of the premier acts of the so-called nu-jazz movement of Scandinavia. Also, The Mars Volta cites Jaga Jazzist as one of their favourite bands. Their new album, One-Armed Bandit, was released on January 25, 2010.

On Spotify, unlike Adrian I can get away with his Dylanesque voice - great stuff

no way, already in its protective mini sleeve.

It came with a free special scratch off coin.

An Anthony Ausgang design, no less. (No, me neither.)
Oliver, As for the music, what do you think? They don't even seem too enthusiastic about it themselves, and I read a terrible review somewhere recently. I like it though.

Cooking dinner and having a look through the collection to see what to get rid of in my bi-annually sale and came across this. Was ready to sell it but totally forgot what a great album it is. It is going nowhere.
Stu if you have never heard this album give it a listen as you might like it.

Chief,
this was my first listen today and I was not too excited about it, will give it another listen later this week.

I've got boxes full of Mojo, Uncut, Word, Q, Select and Vox free CD's (and cassettes). I just can't bring myself to throw them away, there again a lot of them are pretty good and have turned me on to loads of acts. This is a recent one. The Sigur Ros track is a belter.

This is probably my favorite of the first batch of 4, but there really is no weak link.

I think he felt ECM was not the right place for him from what I understand and went to Camjazz instead. I think it might have been something to do with release schedules and the fact that he wanted to release albums more often than ECM would probably be able to accommodate.
Do you have the ECM Peter Erskine albums? They are really John Taylor albums in all but name - he is the dominant voice on the record and they are superb.
I am going to play Time Being.
