I am so disappointed with this Jedwood/Jennifer Mayer release. Just played the CD (which came with the vinyl) and my flabber was ghasted. How could a talented artist like JM could produce this papThe vinyl will never be played by me, in the hope that someone would offer me a supply of bitter lemons in exchange.
I got that along with "Where The Light Is" and after the first 2 tracks of "Battle Studies" my thought was: "That Jennifer really F*cked him up!". I couldn't finish all the tracks and went on to the Live-CD: to me(!) it surpassed BS (and we know what that is!) on all fronts and it even made me like some songs I skipped halfway before hearing this! So if "Where The Light Is" is not part of your collection yet, maybe you should check that out; he deserves credit![]()
Hi HF,
I have "Where The Light Is"; "Try!"; "Village Sessions" & "Room for Squares" which are I enjoy immensely. Don't like "Continum" as much, it's ok, especially with the live DVD. I think when you self produce your material, objectivity suffers. An outside producer would have said this material was SH*T and go away and create some meaningful music.
I have finally given up with John Mayer. Have all his releases excluding the new one. His pop releases are for me "light", the musical equivalent of drinking cherryade. It will sell truckloads in certain places as a result. I just find his voice sickly sweet as well. Not often I dislike something that is supposedly good. Sorry chaps.
I have to agree Adrian

I thought WTF when i first played the Battle Studies cd for the first few times.
It started to grow on me though.
By the time my vinyl came from the usa it was growing more and more.
Play the vinyl its better even though it has the same music on it.
Not up to the standard of his other works though.
But a grower.
Stu
Hi Stu,
I'm sorry but if JM was in my front room playing this guff to me, I would call the musicians union and ask them to come round and prosecute him on the spot. When people have criticised "The Incident", they would do well compare it with this sickly turd of a release. From now on I will "Spotify" everything before I buy. Just to clarify, "Battle Studies" is Sh*te!

I like what I have by John Mayer, Heavier Things, Continuum and Live Where the Light Is, I was not very impressed by the latest one, more of the same but some how very clinical and soul-less.
I wasn't very taken by Paulo Nutini the couple of times I've seen him, so won't chase that album either.

I've got Heavier Things on again - one more try - to see if I can like it. Should be called Lighter Things if you ask me but it is pleasant enough.

Much the same reaction I have when you Miles and others are going on about MD and a lot of other jazz stuff.
Plenty of different stuff to go round for every body eh?
We have been agreeing for a couple of days now, so it had to snap soon.
I guess Larry Carlton is a bit jazz lite for you too?

Yes he has a weird stance, doesn't he?

Gerard Starkie - Drawbridge (available to download for Free here)
About Gerard Starkie (extract)
Gerard Starkie is one of the finest singers in England. That might sound like pure rhetoric but the evidence has long been evident from the two magnificent albums that Starkie recorded with his former band, Witness.
Those records Before the Calm (see Spotify) in 1999 and Under a Sun in 2001 received the most extraordinary critical applause, some of which was especially reserved for Starkies own performances. The Times newspaper, for instance, claimed that Starkies vocals are imbued with that nebulous quality of soul fragile, sensitive and exuding a dignified stoicism doubtless born of experience while Q magazines review of Under a Sun stated that almost overburdened by yearning melodies, chief Witness Gerard Starkie sings about lifes travails in aching tones reminiscent of REMs Michael Stipe.

JM is best on "Where The Light Is" to my taste. And, Yes: "Heavier Things" and "Room For Squares" are "Light", but I like them anyway, cause they are relaxing. He just shines playing live: I listen to technique first, lyrics maybe later

Different strokes for different folks - JM is on my no play list.

Exceptional. A mere two plays and i love it already. I'm clearly going to have to buy the rest. Windows, an excellent shop in Newcastle, has a few on sale for £7 each.
What might you suggest next?

If you enjoyed Duke with Collins vocals, try Trick of the Tail next. Seconds Out, a live album is exceptional as well and then you could try Wind and Wuthering. After that go back further to the older Gabriel led albums. Take a look at the Genesis, Yes, Caravan thread as well for more comments.
One recommendation - I have all the various remasters of Genesis. The new remasters are also remixes of their albums (likely to be the ones on sale in your shop)and unfortunately are not as good as the older versions of the albums. I have been playing the new 2007 version of Trick in the car this week and could not believe some of the remix changes to the album.
I would buy either a 1984 version - one going on ebay right now at 9.99 or the 1994 (Definitive Edition Remaster) which again is pretty good and with the original remix and on amazon.
Email me if you want to talk further (in profile). Glad to hear you liked Duke - an album I have played for 30 years and still love it as much as I did way back then.

Great debut but lousy follow up. So much promise wasted.

Haim,
How is your New year weather?
I think we might have more snow over here for once?
Regards Stu
Stu,
Cold here. Last Saturday (high of minus fourteen degrees) I got very close to getting frost bites on my nose which turned black for being jammed against the cold body of my SLR for too long. We are expecting 12 inched of snow in the next 24 hours.
