Of the three new ECMs you've played, this one looks most interesting to me.

Have you heard the second Curios album? I really like the first one (bought at the weekend) - there's a really good feel to it of a young band trying out different ideas. Tentative, but in a good way.

Meanwhile, this plays:

It's a must for anyone who likes the ECM release "Asturiana".

The Food album is along the lines of Arve Henriksen and Jon Hassell - electronic sounds etc. This deserves late night headphone listening which I will do later tonight.

The beauty of the three new ones is Ketil Bjornstad. Rather lovely. Not so sure about Terje yet.

The second Curios album, Closer is the one you have just bought - their first album was called Hidden in 2007. Closer won BBC jazz album of the year.

I have Closer and the new one The Other Place. I quite like them both but probably need to play them some more to get overly familiar with them. Tom Cawley, the pianist has been doing sterling work for Peter Gabriel live and on CD - must have been a nice gig for him.

I will look out for Ibrerico (listening now on spotify). I like Pablo Marquez - have you tried this lovely album?

No but it's been on my list for a while. I didn't make the connection with the Iberica CD. I'd certainly persevere with Curios - I've only played that CD once, but I have a good feeling about it, and see lots of potential.

This piece of vinyl is at least 25 years old and crackling away, somewhat. Still, fantastic stuff - it's been a long time since I listened to it. Arguably Lou Reed's best.....

One of the most underrated and tragic musicians ever - a true guitar genius:

Still in a lingering Russian mood.

Felix Mendelssohn: Emanuel Ax (Piano), Itzhak Perlman (Violin), Yo-Yo Ma (Cello)

Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello no 1 in D minor, Op. 49
Trio for PPiano, Violin and Cello no 2 in C minor, Op. 66

It came! I'm pleased about the recording! But then again I'm always pleased when I can hear a different approach. The biggest thing to note is that the opening and closing Allegro movements where the tempo is probably the slowest I've ever heard these trios. For me this is a bonus! I can now hear the harmonies better and the exchange of voices and handoffs between instruments is impeccable. At these tempos it allows us to hear more details and appreciate more what is going on. These are very solid, mature, and respectable performances. However, with this you do lose a little of the excitement. The opening movements of each trio is marked Molto allegro agitato and Allegro energico e con fuoco. You don't have to understand Italian to get what Mendelssohn might be asking for. The slower Andante movements are almost spot on. The scherzos are good but not as playful as some I've heard as well.

If you care for a little more élan then any of the full time trios will meet that need. Trio Wanderer is about as fast as it gets. Florestan Trio is about middle of the road.

Earlier,

Beethoven Grosse fugue, opus 133.

First in the proper version for string quartet played by the Budapest Quartet [in mono, circa 1952/3-ish, recorded by American Columbia], and then Klemperer's recording [in stereo, from 1955, recorded by EMI/English Columbia] with the Philharmonia Orchestra's string section.

Both are staggering musical expositions!

Folk Dances & Songs of the gentleman above, played by Havard Gimse on the piano.

Doug,

The slowness of the trio sound appealing.

Haim, I'm still going to order some Havard Gimse soon!

Now, thanks to George I won't be getting much sleep tonight or for the next few weeks.

Before I go to work:

A great, underrated band. They release a new album, "My Room in the Trees", in late June.

On Spotify as I have just (hopefully) bought an original Japanese 1st press on cd of this for the princely sum of $12 + postage.

Fabulous album.
