Wonderful recording.
Very tasty. Even on my car stereo system. Just heard track one on the Supernait earlier and it sounds even better. I'm in heaven. One of the few things in the world (Naim, ECM, good music and good food) better than ... ahem ... (insert the world's favourite physical activity here. It's not golf!

quote:Doug,
I am narrowing my choices for Beethoven's piano trios. It is coming down to Beaux Arts, Parnassus or the Guarneri piano trios.
I asked about the Guarneri guys because I don't have any of their music. On their set, the trios Op. 38 & Op. 11 are performed with clarinet instead of violin.
Regards,
Haim
Haim, I don't envy you if you are going to pick only one. Each group has its own characteristics (good & bad) and yet, their is no wrong choice here. Whoever you pick will grow on you and you'll always compare others to your first set being the ones you were broken in on and spent the most time with. You actually have four choices here since the Beaux Arts Trio could really be broken into two distinct choices; the early recordings with violinist Daniel Guilet and the later ones with violinist Isidore Cohen. The former plays very straight with little or no vibrato and the latter playing with much more warmth and vibrato. I'd recommend the Beaux Arts with Cohen but remembering that the Beaux Arts Trio largely revolves around Menahem Pressler anyway.
Concerning the clarinet in the Op. 11 and 38 piano trios this is a nice bonus as these trios were actually written for this combination. Of course, you can substitute in the violin as is what most everyone does. With the Op. 38 trio this is not an original work but a nice take on Beethoven's Op. 20 Septet.
All I know is that I have already put the Guarneri Trio set on my wish list to buy. The latter Beaux Arts and the Guarneri 5 cd sets probably offer the best value as you get the extra disc with some of the miscellaneous piano trios that not all groups seem to record. Your choice is whether you want the clarinet or violin versions for the two trios mentioned. The Parnassus set will be the most expensive (being newer and only 4 cd) but they are richly recorded and a strong contender to the other two.

When Internet disruptions are sorted out by May 2, I will place an order for it.
Is there a DVD of the concert? I will try facial recognition software to pick you out from the crowd!![]()
Must be like having your right arm cut off with your internet problems.
No DVD of the Whisper Not show but etched in my mind only. There are a couple of other DVD's of the Trio out there though

Harper Simon
note to Gordon - I think it is quite good. Comparisons will of course be made to family members, as with Jakob Dylan and Crosby Loggins, but I think Harper and the others are making music that stands well on its own. I don't see them changing the world of music, but they make my days better.

A nice way of saying it and a good outcome.

I get some of my best listening in the car. I am sure Diana Krall was in the passenger seat yesterday but I looked over and it was the missus. The music did sound so good though.

Guess this music is best with that live atmosphere of the Village Vanguard and the clink clink of those bottles of Brooklyn lager.
I did see Brad and his team at the Village Vanguard once but I do not think it made an Art of the Trio release. I think I need to listen to the complete series soon end to end.

Cursing the volcano in Iceland that disrupted this trio's travel plans, and forced them to cancel the Halifax concert I had a ticket for.

This double CD offers a change in the way Mehldau offers his talent that is most entertaining. There are too many that - once success is granted - don't dare to change. Tord last week, Manu with his third copy of the same, and others. Brad Mehldau was in danger to be branded to trio or solo Jazz, and dared to escape. Hat's off…
