Amen!
The Wayne Shorter solo in 'Aja' is pretty amazing too!
This was the stuff that I was listening to when the rest of my classmates were into 80s pop such as Duran Duran and Culture Club.

Gordon,
What do you think of her?
She received excellent reviews in the press here. I have her disc "Notes From the Village" but I don't find myself listening to it too often.
Haim
To be honest Haim I don't listen to this one very often but I do find her technique quite brilliant.
Is she related in any way to Avishai Cohen, the great double bassist?

He sings better than his last effort but it still is not a beautiful voice. Still, quite good.
Miles,
Samples and info are available from Walter's site here. A stonger album than 11 Tracks of Whack imho. It shows his influence on the Dan sound, which is of course one of the greatest songwriting partnerships EVER![]()
Many thks guys.

Agreed, a fine SD moment, and a perfect way to sign off on the first phase of the Becker/Fagen partnership.
But... Does anyone have a clue what "Third World Man" is about?! The lyrics are elliptical, even by SD standards.
Nice to see some Steely Dan love on the board. I first heard Can't Buy a Thrill as a teenager, and I am still listening to the band thirty years later, and finding new things to admire. I'm sure the jazz inflections of their later albums were instrumental in my (eventual) conversion to jazz proper.
Cheers
Nigel

Steely Dan's 'The Royal Scam', 'Aja' and 'Gaucho' are a great blend of jazz, blues, pop, r&b and rock. Even though 'proper jazz' is really wonderful to listen to, I could not imagine a world without the music of Steely Dan. Simply gorgeous compositions, arrangements and musicianship.

Hard to believe he was only 16 years old when this was recorded last year.

Nigel - as you say a perfect song to end phase one. I have no idea what it is about but I am not really someone that pays a lot of attention to lyrics except for certain songs.
I have it on repeat at the moment - there really should be an extended fade out version - say an extra 30 mins
