Couldn't agree more with you on the details. APO lists most of these things in the booklet - the Monk titles were mastered by Doug Sax, it doesn't get any better.

I'm listening to it on redbook only, but the 555 does a pretty good job when it comes to the redbook layer. Cool

I turned it off - too early for it.

Adrian, it seems the boys in NY (on SH.tv) did enjoy the PG show, some of them are following in your shoes and are going for two in a row.

Only a first play but it is without question an outstanding album. Having heard it and read the feature in this months Jazzwise I would love to see them live.

But... Does anyone have a clue what "Third World Man" is about?! The lyrics are elliptical, even by SD standards.

Nigel - as you say a perfect song to end phase one. I have no idea what it is about but I am not really someone that pays a lot of attention to lyrics except for certain songs.

I have it on repeat at the moment - there really should be an extended fade out version - say an extra 30 mins Winker If I were to choose one Steely song, this is it.

I think I might be at the other end of the spectrum - if the music I'm listening to has lyrics, they better be good. Hence, the survival in my collection of Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Kings of Convenience, Sufjan Stevens, when I've traded in a lot of rock and pop CDs. In some ways, I see my focus on jazz and classical nowadays, as a flight from bad lyrics in rock/pop. Winker

Anyway, here's a nice article about Steely Dan, and their lyrics:

Steely Dan - Ten Most Obscure Lyrics

It highlights one of the things I enjoy about Dan songs - the contrast between the pretty, pop-like melodies, and the lyrical content (e.g. the poisonous expression of prejudice in "Barrytown", or the pervy "come on" of "Everyone's Gone to the Movies").

My favourite Dan song is "The Boston Rag" from "Countdown to Ecstasy" - but I have no idea what it's about. Smile
