MilesSmiles: How do you rate this album?

On first listen pretty poorly compared to her work in the 90s. Am a big fan but did not get into this one.

How is that Philip Catherine album? I really like Hein Van de Geyn - he made one of my fave jazz CD's called Baseline - Why Really (with John Abercrombie) - you can listen to it on spotify. Now playing

Criminally underrated Philipino jazz piano great Bobby Enriquez (1943-96) in a set guaranteed to make your heart race. With bass ace Eddie Gomez and super drummer Al Foster successfully holding on, the exuberant pianist turns eight jazz standards inside out and takes "Classical Gas" as an unaccompanied solo. Highlights of this typically high-powered Enriquez date include "All Blues," "Bye Bye Blackbird," Thelonious Monk's "Four in One," and "Cherokee.

The album is superb, real old skool. Funnily enough I think HVdG stands out as the premier artist on this album.

The qualities which have made his (PC) reputation are all gathered here, and magnified: beautiful melodies, particularly well thought out harmonies and fabulous tones. The double-bassist Hein Van de Geyn is amazingly musical, strong and sensuous and the drummer Dré Pallemaerts, keeps close to the outlines and brings vigorous colour strokes to the many scenes.

I will try out that album..thank you.

Hidden in the backwaters of my collection.

Prompted by Lontano and legendary bass players...

quote:
Brian Bromberg’s 2002 release, Jaco pays tribute to the late, great bassist/composer Jaco Pastorius in a way that is reverential while, at the same time, breathing new ideas into some of Pastorius’ most well-known material. And that is truly the best form of homage one can pay to someone like Jaco, a groundbreaking artist who, in the space of a little over a decade, truly changed the nature of the bass, its role and its potential.

With an arsenal of basses that, quite simply, didn’t exist when Jaco was alive, Bromberg makes Jaco a bass-players dream; a tour-de-force that demonstrates not only how Jaco altered the world’s perception of the bass, but how bassists have taken his ideas and, since then, moved on.

Recorded and mixed by Marcus Wippersberg, and what a fantastic job he did.

I play a lot of my music quite loud here but the noise this album makes with it's bass and drums, it must be heard all around the neighbourhood. Sounds great in the car I have to say.

Played it very loud this afternoon - so far no complaints from the neighbours. Big Grin
