Thank you, Voltaire, for this comment !!!
I feel the same. Being a PM "fan" and concert goer, I just fail ti understand what this is about. Other than a nice experiment. If you see the video, it looks and sounds appealing. Listening to the CD is - uhm - like a wax museum ? Or like thee recordings where they play old paper rolls that move The piano keys ? Whatever… This whole Orchestrion thing Is nothing compared to real musicians that understand their job.
Adrian ?

I have to be honest and say that I am struggling a bit with this album. I fully appreciate the technical boundries that PM is exploring and I like the resulting music but the sound just seems so dead to me, dynamically flatlined. Having read a few interviews with PM I suspect that is the sound he was going for or have I missed the point?
There is a nice piece on Stereophile that seems to reach the same conclusions as sjust and I here though the reviewer stills gives the album 'album .of the month'

I don't have anywhere near the knowledge of Euro Jazz as yourself but I will heartily recommend it (walkover)

Listening to this (Sapporo concert) in a hotel lobby, must be disturbing. Listening to it with some level of concentration, it is a real pleasure (including the Sapporo encore).
cheers

Another brilliant recent release...(2009)
Excerts from Bill Layman. Full review here.

quote:And now Christian McBride, the finest bassist of his generation, is on track. It’s his best record, and it puts a little jump in your step. It’s hot.
quote:...With his new band, “Inside Straight”, and its new disc Kind of Brown, McBride finally feels focused and serious. This music is unself-consciously traditional: it’s fun; it swings its ass off. It’s not experimental, but it gives superb voice to several brilliant players and one new discovery.

Dusty - I played it last week. It is pretty good I have to say. There is this one as well - slowish though and I prefer the other.

On CD earlier, I didn't buy it today, I posted in the wrong thread. :-

quote:This early-'70s meeting between two giants of the tenor sax (both of whom by this time were living in Europe on a permanent basis) is full of memorable moments. The styles of Ben Webster and Don Byas provide a distinct contrast (though Byas was also a swing-influenced saxophonist, he was heavily into bop as well), yet they mesh very well together
It's almost impossible to have favorites in the jazz sax genre as there are so many superb contenders but I don't think anyone phrases quite like Ben Webster to my ear.

A Ben Webster I don't have.
