Pretty impressive box set:
"The Decca / Deutsche Grammophon catalogue of Mahler recordings is unsurpassable. Our major contribution to the celebrations this year will be the first-ever Mahler Complete Edition, a combined effort of Decca and Deutsche Grammophon recordings as an 18-CD supe-rbudget box, with the ten symphonies, Das Lied von der Erde, Das klagende Lied, the song cycles, the Knaben Wunderhorn songs and early works - in benchmark recordings by a great assembly of Mahler conductors, singers and orchestras. Each Symphony gets a different conductor, and the list is awesome: Abbado (no. 6), Bernstein (no. 5), Boulez (no. 4), Chailly (no. 10), Giulini (Das Lied), Haitink (no. 3), Karajan (no. 9), Kubelik (no. 1), Mehta (no. 2), Sinopoli (no. 7), Solti (no. 8). The orchestras are the finest in the world: Berliner Philharmoniker, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestrea, Philharmonia Orchestra, Wiener Philharmoniker. Singers featured include Thomas Hampson (song-cycles, with Bernstein), Anne Sofie von Otter and Thomas Quasthoff (their Grammy-winning Knaben Wunderhorn lieder, with Abbado), Ileana Cotrubas and Christa Ludwig in the Resurrection Symphony, Maureen Forrester in the Third, Juliane Banse in the Fourth, Francisco Araiza and Brigitte Fassbaender in Das Lied von der Erde , and a starry array in no.8). In addition, rarities like Das klagende Lied, rejected movements from the First and Second Symphonies, Mahler's early songs and chamber music are included in the Edition."

I also learned this late, and it saddened me. A great musician.

Sadly, it has passed me by that she had died from breast cancer earlier this year - only 37 y.o.

Pogo remains my all time favourite pianist... pity he doesn't record anymore. Love that recording by Mullova and Dantone, by the way.

The unmistakeably wonderful sound of Depeche Mode. While a lot of music from this era sounds dated now this debut album from the Basildon Boys still sounds great today. Vince Clarke sure did know how to write a tune.
Mark
I saw them in mid '81 performing this album at the Lyceum in The Strand and it was a stand out show.
Great presence for such young lads at the time.
