Dean...

Great album Dean! Only in prog rock could an entire album be inspired by such a subject!

I was listening to a BBC podcast of an interview with him sometime last week. Highly recommended. He was talking about singing folk songs on his current album and how traditional middle eastern folk music has affected his understanding of music.

It's probably a larger topic for another time but I am spellbound when it comes to creativity that comes from suffering. Sam Baker suffered awfully but managed to write such wonderful music. I think I have mentioned before my complete respect for war poets who can turn destruction into creativity.

I have a huge collection of poetry written by people in abject suffering and the quality of the writing is just humbling. Anyone interested in sampling what I'm talking about might like to check out Irina Ratushinskaya's 'Dance with a Shadow'. Irina was arrested in the mid 80's in Russia accused of anti goverment propagenda ( she is a poet). She was sentenced to seven years hard labour (rape, beatings, isolation, etc) but her poems were smuggled out and published by Bloodaxe. Unmissable literature imho and indicitive of the kind of music that I just can't resist.

Smile

PS- For anyone who is wondering why I am comparing music to literature and vice versa...I don't seperate them from each other or from art.
