Santana: Abraxas
'70 Release. The MOFI Original Master Recording Reissue.
This is still one of my all-time favourite record. Especially for the wonderful 'Incident at Neshabur' with a jazzy keyboard.
I thought my original US issue ( KC 30130 ) was pretty decent albeit there are some distortion/overload heard in certain spots. Finally bit the bullet and decided to order the MOFI version.

A minute the needle hit the record, I knew this was going to be good. From the incredible intro build up to more realistic instruments tonal rendering coupled with increased/enhanced bass dynamics, it makes their riveting performance even greater.

Interestingly the vocal mix now is in the same plane as the rest of musicians compared to the original release, but I got the feeling, the engineered for this reissue tried to average so that there is no spots that can overload throughout.

Also, it's now mixed channel correct for the first time. Apparently, all releases are done incorrectly left and right channel are reversed.

New collection of MOFI records so far are quite an improvement from the older generation releases void of smiley EQ.

Hope they'll release more from Santana's catalogue.

Just found this recorded on a Maxell XLII-S 90 (chrome cassette tape)

I can only vaguely remember being lent the CD from a very enthusiastic Kenny G fan who was a colleague-friend of mine, i think my first impression was.. 'okay but nothing special' but hearing it now getting played back for the first time in 17 or so years it justifies more play time,.. (i'm also suprised and very pleased how good the tape play back quality is)
Kenny G does to saxophone what Larry Carlton does to guitar, so won't suit all tastes but still very nice mellow relaxing music : )

Yes, and I can testify, that the music on this CD is played with balls.

Warming up the eardrums for what I hope will be the concert of the year tomorrow night at the Barbican. Great summery music. I have not seen the Pat Metheny Group for too long now, some seven years, so excitement is rising.

Think the last time I saw him was 2 or 3 year ago in NYC - really looking forward to this one.

Let me get warmed up with a classic on ECM:
