quote:Munch, not really my genre... but I happen to have the CD version, which is incredibly poorly recorded. Does vinyl make a difference?

I have the CD and agree that the recording is shocking. My vinyl is better, but not by much. The producers/label should be embarrased putting this out !

It's a double album. One a bit more mellow, one a bit faster. Why not see if you can have a listen on Amazon (or similar) to see if you like it.
One of my favourite RHCP's.

Jazz isn't really my cup of tea (apart from Diana Krall) but with a voice like this...

If you want it on vinyl, rhino.co.uk is by far the cheapest site I've found it on. The packaging is excellent.
Hope you enjoy it if you order it.

Well, after a good experience with Hancock's Maiden Voyage, I had a high hope for this Japanese reissue.
Good bits:
A low surface noise
A better imaging and instrument separation. Ella stands in front with a sharper focus
Better bass transient and more ambient air
Bad bits:
Overall tonal balance is brighter and much leaner
Upper midrange overload/distortion
Cymbals and chimes appear out of place
Whilst it's cool to be able to hear all the words Ella is singing, somehow I felt that cohesion is lost between the musicians. Nice to hear the kick drums and finger snaps which were burried in the original mono version, new details sometimes appear out of place. Taking a focus away from Ella's performance.
The original mono issue captures Ella's infectious exuberant presence just as well, if not better than this expensive reissue. ( 50$ USD )
Maybe I am used to her rounder wholesome voice on this particular original copy, but i much prefer the holistic approach over analytical dissected reissue.
For Ella reissues, US Speaker's Corner pressing are far better but this Japanese pressing is a disappointment.

Madeleine Peyroux: Careless Love
'04 Release. Mobile Fidelity Reissue.
Contrasting performance and different style from Ella, but fidelity is excellent on this LP.
I still think her debut album Dreamland is the best one of the lot.
