Although I am finding that for me his stuff has not "aged" as well as I would have thought with the passage of time...

So have they remastered 'Cunning Stunts' again Stu? I was referring to the remaster that came out with the other Deram albums, maybe in the mid 1990s. I was never a great lover of 'Blind Dog at St. Dunstans'. I have a copy on CD but wouldn't bother to get a remaster.
One needs to exercise some caution regarding remastered issues. I was speaking with Dave Stewart about the fairly recently released remasters of the two 'Hatfield and the North' albums. Dave said that he was not involved in the process and he hadn't even heard the remastered versions. He did say that Esoteric Records had made a good job of the Egg albums though.
It seems like the Canterbury vault is fast emptying. I know that Dave found a box of reel to reel tapes featuring live performances by Hatfield and the North and when he and Barbara moved to the west country, Pip Pyle had the tapes and started working through them. Two new CDs were released by Burning Shed ('Hatwise Choice' and 'Hattitude'). There was going to be a third CD and maybe a fourth but Pip sadly left us before he had a chance to complete the project.
The unreleased jewel in the Canterbury crown are the sessions that Hatfield and the North recorded for the BBC. They are quite superb!

I haven't the original vinyl to compare it with, but I thoroughly enjoyed it; it does sound highly etched with perhaps a bit too much separation between the players, but when the songs are so good you find yourself just listening. A CDX2-VAM1250/Stax system does calm any overdone transients and is kind to the reproduction, which is great for listening in the early hours. The packaging is good too, but the little booklet is written by Chris Welch and makes it plain why I never really enjoyed reading the Melody Maker; it is more about him than the band and says nothing that you couldn't glean from simply listing Caravan's discography - sleeve notes by a band member would have been preferable, but a minor point.quote:Originally posted by Doctor Jazz:quote:Originally posted by munch:Kenny, quote:Originally posted by ROTF:![]()
Cunning Stunts - Remaster
What do you think?
I still like the original LP and cd more.
Stu
I have all the remastered Deram albums and the recent box set. The sound is not too good I agree but those bonus material makes them essential purchases (The remastered original albums). They can be had at bargain prices. The box set is a good starting point but you can probably buy the original remastered albums for little more than the box set.

Yes I like him too - This one is more Brooce and the E Street band take 2+...
Hi,
This is the only WH we have, bought at Heidi's urging after she heard a song somewhere. I love it, but haven't found the disposable cash for another from him yet - the list is too long.
Do you have others of his you can comment on ?
regards
Jeff A
This one is the closest in style to the new one and a bit more raw still - the other two which bookended Blackbird are a little lighter but still with a similar tone (although I don't have Carousel it is on Spotify, as are all of them) - Don't think you'd think any of them duff if you like his latest. They're all on Spotify so you cna listen first though
