On CD:-

Janacek's last opera, under the late Charles Mackerras. Aside from a performance of the cunning little vixen in Amsterdam, I am not familiar with Janacek's works so don't know how From the House of the Dead compares. However, this opera/performance strikes me as immensely powerful.

Near the end of the opera, prisoners release an eagle they have been taken care of. For some reason, Decca chopped the eagle from the cover picture. A good man on Amazon put up the complete painting:

There are no Mofi's, the original Dutch or German CD pressings sound the best. There are as well two AU20 gold CDs that are outstanding.

Dean,

There was thread on the other forum, asking which CDs you would take to your grave. I listed the Abbey Road Black Triangle and this one.

Oooo! I might look out for a copy, probably will not be cheap, just to have a nerdy a/b session with my 180g re-mastered version, which is a cracking re-master.

A dramatic change in mood, the Chelmsford Electronic Genius is about to give me a lesson in kit manipulation and Jazz improvisation.

Frankfurt / Germany, Opera House of all places.

I saw Frank on his Overnite Sensation tour; he began by saying he was only interested in playing his big hit singles and if the audience didn't like commercial music they should leave. He then played a continuous one hour set of music I'd never heard before, but it ended with I'm just like a penguin in bondage boy - he left the stage, but then returned to play Brown Shoes Don't Make It, I might be moving to Montano soon and King Kong.

Empire Pool - 1974(?) - he was very good, but not my favourite live show of all time that was some other band ....

Back on the FZ topic - if you get a chance go see his son's band doing "Zappa Plays Zappa" - incredible musicianship and as good/close as you can get nowadays. I've seen them 3 times and would go again. Saw his dad in the 80's on the "Them or Us" tour.
