Now i'd always assumed this would be some dodgy guitar 'noodling' type music - a quick listen on Spotify has convinced me otherwise and a CD has been purchased. I love this bit of the forum for discovering musical pleasures i'd otherwise overlook !

I just cannot stop playing this masterpiece. I got it back in April and it has been a bit of a slow burner for me. We played it all weekend in the car and the wife loves it and talks about it (she does not do that too often). Not one for when the kids are around though.

Observer Review

In theory, the star turn on this solo debut from Colorado singer Grant is the backing band: Texan rockers Midlake. But they've never played on anything as good as this masterpiece of soft, 70s melodies and sadness. Grant recently confessed to suicidal thoughts but he can also see the funny side of the end of one's tether, hence the fabulous "Sigourney Weaver", which sounds like the Carpenters and compares an existential crisis to the actress facing down insane odds in Alien, or the hapless Winona Ryder in Dracula, when she just couldn't "get her accent right". Terrific.

I'm not surprised, it's a wonderful album, not a duff track in sight. I'm continually listening to it on we7 and intend to get the cd or vinyl or both.

The Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Not overwhelmed on first listen, but that doesn't mean much. I found both previous albums underwhelming on first listen, but now think they're pretty darn good (esp. Funeral)

I should receive the CD soon and I'll let you know my thoughts later this week. Liked what I heard on myspace.

Chance would be a fine thing Winker

Meanwhile, going back further in time, again on vinyl, this time on the old liberty Records label, the mighty 'Hogs move away from purely blues to something heavier..
