A few of Isolde Ahlgrimm´s 1950 Philips recordings can be had here (English suites, French Suites and Toccatas):

I own the WTC and the Art of Fugue from that set and agree, that the interpretations are well worth knowing and that the AoF is preferable to her later recording for Tudor..

I have also owned the Partitas and the French Suites, though I found these rather underwhelming.
She was an important figure in the development of the early HIP movement.
Hello Poul,

Her 1956 AofF is a very strange version which i found different emotionally, quite unpredictable and even aggressive in some places, however she did perform this during 1956 - the year of her divorce so this may account for any bad-tempered clavier?

Many people say it doesn’t suit it played in harpsichord but I think it’s there to be challenged.

I also enjoy the ‘warts and all’ recording approach to the fickleness of her instrument, a few ‘plinks’ and ‘flump’ noises here and there give it a fine tangible authentic flavour imho.

Do you own a copy of her 'Mozart Cycle' ?
I’ve never seen it available anywhere... in any format, and would love to get hold of a copy! : )

As far as I know the Philips AoF was recorded 1953 and the Tudor AoF in the mid-1970es. I do not think any of them deserves to be called strange, considering the broad emotional spectrum of many of the existing recordings.

I am not aware that she ever recorded any Mozart at all. Do you know it for sure?

I'm assuming that (p)1956 on the record label means that the recording (or performance) is from 1956 (?)

By strange i mean the feel is the most aggressive i've come across, but this may be the effect the harpsichord has on the AofF,? perhaps this is why many people don't think the harpsichord lends itself to the AofF,? it being out of character to the mysteriousness this musik usually brings, however i think it's mainly just the way she plays it.

This is in the sleeve-notes...

...Among her achievements are a “Mozart Cycle” in which she played the complete pianoforte works on an original fortepiano dating from 1787, and her “Bach Cycle” which included the complete Harpsichord works of this master. She played both cycles entirely from memory as she is accustomed to do in all her other programmes.

(p) means produced, and this may be several years later than the recording actually took place, in this case three years later.

Probably the effect arises bacause of the combination of rather close miking and the character of her somewhat harsh sounding 20th century instrument which is far from a period item.

I think the Mozart cycle was a series of concerts which never were recorded.
