The amazing follow up:

There is a really nice cover of Steely Dan's 'Aja' on this one.

McBride in sizzling form on the electric bass.

Roy Hargrove is the real star on this album, but McBride is also in great form as part of the rhythm section.

More pyrotechnics on the electric bass and double bass.

Best enjoyed loud. At times like these, it is very to wish that your nearest neighbour is a mile away.

McBride's latest. A lot mellower than some of his previous works.

What does this 3 CD edition have over the Original Soundtrack?

The "3 Disc Set" includes more music from the film, some of it is extended versions of the single disc, and some of it is the music without the dialog of the first disc.

That first disc is still my favorite, even though I wish some of the dialog wasn't there. Like most thing related to "Blade Runner", there are many versions and opinions.

Great stuff, one of the few scores that works without the film IMO. The US collector's edition dvd and (region-less) blu-ray contains five different versions of the film. Four of them were pulled from the work print, the final cut involved some re-shoots (with the same actors!) and new CGI. Wasn't aware that Vangelis composed new music, though?

This is an album made by Duran Duran (well 3 of them, Simon Nick and Roger) when they took a break.

It has fine music on it with a number of distinguished musicians (including Duran Duran) as guests.

Two of Mendelssohn's piano quartets, given a great performance by the Fauré Quartet.

So what was your verdict? I have been looking forward to this. I will buy it as I have all the other Rene Jacob Mozart operas in the series and really like them. Not out until 13th here.

Disc of the year! The way the spoken dialogue is integrated with the musical parts, the deft touches that Jacobs applies to tempo, the way that he interprets many original stage instructions into music, the original sound effects all work in favor of the opera.

Singers are top notch, although as in Jacobs' other opera recordings, none are dominating and likewise this performance won't be remembered for the singing. That's misleading, because the singers carry off the task of avoiding most of the sugar and actually making the story sound rather good. I've always considered Zauberflöte a 'nice' work but now I'm convinced it's as great as his other mature operas.
