A stunning album. Paul Bley once again proving that silence is not merely the absence of sound.

Despite the fact that pianist and composer Paul Bley had been a renowned and innovative jazzman for nearly 20 years, 1973 saw the release of his most mature and visionary work, and one that to this day remains his opus.

This is one of the most influential solo piano recordings in jazz history, and certainly one that defined the sound of the German label ECM.

It had such a limited release it was really difficult to find a local(ish) cinema that was showing it.

Conceptually (though not chronologically) this album might have been called 'What life was like before JC (John Coltrane).

Nigel, Thanks for posting this. Saw your post, and I've just been listening to my copy of Substrata for the first time in ages:

Such a great record, as is the more techno-ey one before it, Patashnik.
