When I reached the wetlands for my run the car's player just started track 3 'One Goes There Alone'. I had to remain seated and listen to the whole piece. Then again, after the run, I started the ride home replaying track 3.
The synergy between the saxophone, the viola and the drums is just exquisite. One of the most underrated ECM discs which I consider among the best in their catalog. Very highly recommended.

Haim, I have just started playing Garbarek myself. The nights are getting darker earlier, I can feel ECM season approaching
I will get In Praise of Dreams out to play soon.
Jan Garbarek's 1983 release, WAYFARER, is characterized by ethereal soundscapes, spacious ensemble playing, and post-Coltrane licks combined with Nordic folk music.
Featuring the gifted, idiosyncratic guitarist Bill Frisell and longtime associate Eberhard Weber on bass, this album bears a distinct resemblance to Garbarek's PATHS, PRINTS, which was released only a couple of years earlier. The major difference between the two albums is the presence of Michael DiPasqua on drums, rather than Jon Christensen.
While the compositions on WAYFARER are played with a little more gusto, we hear the same general approach to the quartet setting here. Garbarek's playing is marked by long, mournful phrases, and his group rarely falls into any groove. Then again, grooves aren't the point with this kind of jazz. Garbarek's goal is to create playful interaction through experiments with tone color, rhythm, and a variety of musical textures, heard best on the exquisitely lopsided, "Pendulum" and on the vibrant title track.
Recorded at Talent Studio, Oslo, Norway in March 1983.
Jan Garbarek Group: Jan Garbarek (soprano & tenor saxophones); Bill Frisell (guitar); Eberhard Weber (bass); Michael DiPasqua (drums, percussion).

The first few seconds of this have made a strongly favourable impression - far better than "Lift Every Voice", the only Charles Lloyd I have heard to date.

Have a listen to Notes from Big Sur - it is on spotify but does not come up when you search on Charles Looyd. Search on Billy Higgins (and most of the Lloyds appear) or the album title.

Thanks Adrian - I'll certainly be exploring more of Lloyd's work (in between catching up on John Zorn's vast back catalogue).
