I've never been a radio listener, but as soon as I heard "You Get What You Give" I was hooked. What a great "pop" song! In 1997 most mainstream music was dark and reflective, and that song was like a ray of sunshine.

quote:To many fans, Iris DeMent's debut INFAMOUS ANGEL remains the best work of her career. Unlike her later records, which sometimes get mired in political dogmatism and bleak melancholy, INFAMOUS ANGEL is the work of a wide-eyed innocent extolling the simple virtues of love, faith, and home.
From the whimsical spiritualism of "Let the Mystery Be" to the brisk love song "Hotter Than Mojave in my Heart" through to the album's closing affirmation of faith (the traditional gospelclassic "Higher Ground"), INFAMOUS ANGEL evokes a world full of promise and possibility. Best of all are "Our Town", a loving tribute to a dying small town, and "Mama's Opry", a stunningly effective reminiscence of childhood and the effectof a mother's love of music. Accompaniment on all 11 tracksis sparse but sublime, unsurprising given the all-star castof musicians who appear here: dobro player Al Perkins, bassist Roy Husky Jr., and singer Emmylou Harris, among others. DeMent's vocals, however, are the album's real musical find. Her big voice and broad pronunciation invite comparisons to Hazel Dickens, the great West Virginian old-time singer.

Great performances but not quite as well recorded/engineered as it might have been.

quote:"I think great songs are born. They are born with all the urgency of childbirth, born out of pain, anger, joy, wit, and delivered by instinct, skill and love." - Gretchen Peters.
It is this passion for the song that fuels all facets of a career that has brought Peters to the Grammys twice as a songwriter, won her a CMA Song Of The Year award for the groundbreaking "Independence Day", taken her on repeated sold-out tours across the UK and Ireland, and seen the release of four critically-acclaimed albums.
Here she proves her own words true: out of the emotional remnants of what she calls a "mid-life epiphany", both personal and professional, she has forged a collection of songs - sometimes painful, sometimes hopeful, always brutally honest, and often transcendent

quote:Widely considered Marianne Faithfull's best album, BROKEN ENGLISH has a hazy, bleary-eyed expressiveness that matches atmosphere with emotional impact. Throughout the 1960s and '70s Faithfull was generally considered a shooting star in the pop firmament, a passing flavor not to be taken seriously by serious music listeners. But 1979's BROKEN ENGLISH changed that with its stylistic curveballs and dark, disconcerting vibe. The album is steeped in the synthesizer sounds typical of the era; but where this tends to date most releases from the time, it works beautifully here. The pulsing surge of the synths balances nicely with Faithfull's sluggish, tattered-sounding voice (the title track is a perfect example). Other album highlights include the bluesy, off-kilter "Brain Drain," and her slicing cover of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero." While compilations will provide a comprehensive look at her work, BROKEN ENGLISH is the Faithfull studio album to get.

Blondie - Autoamerican. An underrated album IMO - it was often overlooked in favour of Parallel Lines and Eat To The Beat, but was a decent album in its' own right. One of their biggest hits, "Rapture", comes from this one.

Bit Stevie Ray Vaughan-ish but none the worst for that.
