Krautrock at its best. Played side A at JonR's bakeoff a few years ago and had the most odd looks, some people don't know great music even if its right in front of them Roll Eyes

What a great record:

Did not get Bowie in my younger years even though my brother played Bowie to death in my house or maybe thats the reason Smile and still don't get him today, I know HEATHEN & PHILISTINE but there you have it.

Not unlike me then. I half-remember Let's Dance first time around, but I got into all the best stuff some years later when my older brothers were at uni... and neither of them took their records. Result!

I must've seen The Man Who Fell to Earth on telly around then, and my brothers had Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Station to Station, Low, Heroes, Lodger, and Scary Monsters between them, and I quickly went through all those. I can't say I was a fan of the second side of Low at the time, but I loved all the rest from the off, and still do. Never heard any of the later ones though.

(I remember trying one of my bro's Tangerine Dream albums around then - once was enough!)

"I once asked Lennon what he thought of what I do. He said, 'It's great, but it's just rock and roll with lipstick on'."

Nice. I haven't ordered it yet. Hmmm, £12, or...

Every time this is on, I end up playing at least four or five times the Largo movement of the Concerto N0. 5 in F Minor, BWV 1056, the same music which was used in "Slaughterhouse-Five".

Debs,

What a difference between the two Gould recordings of the variations. Do you have the 1981 version?

Haim

Hello Haim,

i don’t have nor heard the 1981 version, so don’t know the difference...

but I am very impressed with the quality of the 1955 recording, the play imho is quite agreeable too.
(The cd I have is sony music @ 2004)

and very good choise of music to paint a wall to : )

i'd better get back to work before the paint dries on the brush!

Good choice Flettster. I am not normally a fan of "with strings" combinations, but this is a classic record.

This album is just awesome. Not always sure about "world music". However this has everything from jazzy influences, electric guitar, horn riffs & beats that wouldn't be out of place on a dancefloor.

It's been posted by Huwge before back in 2008, but as per usual I'm a little slow off the mark.

Highly recommended.

I will check this out. I have another album by Issa Bagayoga that I've been enjoying for several years. I agree, it's a great mixture if styles and sounds. Most "world" music seems like a novelty, but this guy is wonderful.
