Comparing my (reasonably well-preserved) original LP with the 180gm pressing that arrived this morning. Still getting my head round spending £17 on one record, as opposed to £2 each secondhand at my local used tune emporium, but enjoying that extra fifteen quids' worth of detail and sparkle.

I had a brief listen to this last year on the web and then ignored it. Now I know Davohorn to be a man of good musical taste so his recent thread on this album inspired me to give it a go. Very nice album.

Must be a couple of years since this one got a listen. A college purchase that takes me back to my student days (Dual 505/1, AR Amp & Wharfedale Diamonds; beer at £1 a pint down the Student Union bar; my ill-conceived attempts to dress like I was in Fields of the Nephilim.)

Don't you just love those conversations that start with "I've got a load of old records I've been meaning to clear out?"

"There were violin virtuosos long before Fritz Kreisler and even before Joseph Joachim and Nicolò Paganini. In Italy, there was Pietro Locatelli (1695-1764), but even he was a young whippersnapper compared to the Bohemian violinist and composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704). (After a little bit of well-placed self-promotion, he became Heinrich "von" Biber in 1677.) English writer Charles Burney lavishly praised both his playing and his compositions, including – so it seems – several of the sonatas on this very CD."

Lalo Schifrin - "There's A Whole Lalo Schifrin Goin' On"

If I wasn't feeling mellow before, I sure as heck am now.

£17 is pretty good price for new vinyl! Glad it seems to be worth the extra dosh. Where is your secondhand emporium? Do you use Ben's in Guildford?

Yep, Ben's it is. Every time I've been in there the place is packed, so he's obviously doing good business.

I was in there a couple of hours ago and it was doing good business. He buys 2-3000 records a week, so he shifts a few! Cheers

I really enjoyed the Brian Eno/Roxy evening last night on BBC4. He is a very interesting guy and I am playing through some of his albums and collaborations today. This is a great album and seeing Byrne perform this last year was a real concert highlight of the year for me - such imagination.

I wondered if you saw the programs last night when you played Country Life earlier. It reminded me to tell you to view the no-man Bush Hall DVD Winker

Gene Loves Jezebel - "Immigrant"
Bought it, listened to it, hated it, and back in the rack it went... for about fifteen years. So far (two tracks in) I'm pleasantly surprised, although not quite sobbing for all those wasted listening years.

The Space program after, which Eno did the soundtrack to was even better. Anyway, the Eno stuff is repeated Sunday night for those interested.

Why and how does this type of thing occur? Is it our changing tastes or dulling of the senses, it could be our developed sense of appreciation for music of all genre's.

Did you just come across this recording in your collection, or did you hear it somewhere recently, which made you dig it out and take another listen?
