"Rarely has a composer seemed so assured of immortality as Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778–1837), so overrated in his own time, so underrated in ours. Born in Pressburg (Bratislava) just inside the Czech border on 14 November 1778, Hummel was a child prodigy who, when he was only eight, went to live and study with Mozart in Vienna for two years. Returning to the city in 1793 he had lessons in counterpoint and composition with Salieri and Clementi, and studied organ with Haydn. By his teens Hummel was rated as one of the top pianists of the day. His concert tours took him all over Europe (including England, Scotland, Poland and Russia). Among his friends and acquaintances were Beethoven (the two later fell out), Cramer, Dussek, Moscheles, Weber, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Chopin; he himself taught Hiller, Henselt, Pauer, Pixis, Thalberg and many other virtuosos of the succeeding generation."

Arturo Toscanini: None Beethoven Symphonies
'58 Release. RCA. Shaded dog mono.
I'm only up to the Symphony no.3 ( 6 more to go! ) but I didn't realise listening to Beethoven can be fun.

Hi Kuma,

that set looks interesting, and i'm wondering... what cartridge are you using for these mono LP's?
it's just that my collection of old but minty mono classical will one day beg for something more compliant than the usual stereo job. (Although i can't afford do anything about this yet, but one day...)

That's a very hypnotic pose of Arturo...

those eyes follow you around the room whichever way you go! Eek

~<>~ Ludwig van Beethoven ~<>~

Symphony no.4 in B flat, Op.60
Overture: "Egmont" Op.84
Symphony no.5 in C minor, Op.67
Overture: "Coriolan" Op.62

The Philharmonia Orchestra
Conducted by Kurt Sanderling

EMI A du Maurier Record Collection (p) 1981
[Stereo] From an original digital master recording

Playing sides 5-8 of this 9 x LP box-set.

Sniffing at the pages of the libretto one can tell this was pre-owned by a pipe smoker...
nice of him to take good care of the vinyl, they still sound very good indeed : )

Debs,

I don't have enough mono records to justify a dedicated mono cartridge. ( love to try a Miyabi mono someday, tho! )

I just use my usual Miyabi/47 in the main rig or I was playing the Akiva in the office system and press the mono button on the preamp. ( thank god for it so that I don't have to disconnect the speaker cable )

so, how's Kurt Standerling's Sym. No.4?
What's his style?

I am stunned that I am liking this old Toscanini disc albeit record condition could be better on some spots. His rhythmic and precise style has a nice sense of flare, too. Everyone seems to play well timed together and I can actually *follow a tune*.

It is refreshing to hear something old but so alive. The performance actually made me listen to the Beethoven's symphonies straight through. ( I haven't been a fan of this composer )

He's cool.

Kuma

i’ve always loved classical music but when younger i revered Beethoven as someone not to rush into, but to enjoy and study when older and wiser… and in the mean-time listen to classics more easy going.

Although now i’m not so sure that is always the best advice, also I keep forgetting my age is getting older than I like to admit, so it’s about time i learnt more about this genius and his musik.

Kurt Sanderling is doing a good job imho but he's very new to me, and I’m tired and ready for bedtime (...and i know it would sound a lot better if I played it on the LP12 and main system instead of my little upstairs system.)
I put the number 4 on because it has my favourite overture after.

My idea was to buy a second Aro that would be dedicated for a serious mono cart, but so far my lotto number haven’t come up yet! : (
