MiniMac-Optocoupler-Naim DAC or MiniMac-Firewire-Weiss DAC202
Posted by: Mattdcb on 28 April 2010
I've been looking at this for a while and can't get the answer to one or two questions.
Will both configurations play 24Bit/192kHz files?
What software do I need on my MiniMac?

The mini wont do 192 via its optical toslink port. The Weiss can via Firewire and the INT202 could supply coaxial SPDIF to a Naim nDAC if you didnt like the 202.

Ok, thanks. Is the Mini limited to 96kHz through the optical toslink then?
The INT202 and Naim DAC looks a tempting option, that combo would be 2K cheaper than the DAC202.

Yep - limited only on the toslink.
On the Weiss front you have the Weiss DAC 2 which is the same price as the nDAC - worth comparing both. The INT202 is a Minerva with a few addtions (remote and nice display) - the Minerva is a DAC2 in a fancy box.

AH yes please do let us know what you think.
I live in Singpoare, both the Naim DAC and the Weiss DAC202 are not yet available for demo....
Cheers

I've been using the new Weiss DAC202 for a couple of weeks now, as the DAC for my "portable" system, with a MacBook Pro. I use either Amarra or Pure Music with iTunes. The new DAC is wonderful - very detailed, lots of air, rich and warm come to mind. Never did hear the Minerva so can't compare. This is my coffee shop system - my table looks a bit like a recording studio, but I love the sound of good music. I also love the Naim DAC in my system with the HDX. Not sure if I'll ever pop the Weiss into my main system, but it might be fun to compare.

Any preference between Amarra and PM when used with the DAC 202?

There's less fiddling around with Pure Music. By that I mean that with Amarra, there's a parametric equalizer - sometimes takes some doing to get the sound just right. As well, I like the upsampling feature with Pure Music - up to 192 kHz. Both sound good, though. Not sure if I have a preference just yet.
