Should wireless router be kept away from system?

Posted by: DT79 on 16 January 2011

I'm looking in to a new equipment stand, and for reasons of convenience it would be preferable to put the wireless router on the stand as well (it's currently on the other side of the room). I already have my Sonos ZP90 a couple of inches to the left of my SN, and I guess that is outputting the same sort of wireless signal too.

Does any know or have experience of whether this is OK, or potentially detrimental to system performance?

If it is we are all stuffed.

I'd keep it away from the system. In the same room is fine, but i'd not put it right next to the kit.

Keep it away for aesthetic reasons, the power adapter will be rough as hell and those lights will drive you crazy unless you live next to an amusement park.

Thanks for the replies. Luckily it's an Apple Time Capsule, so aesthetically at least it's not so bad, just one constant green light on the front and an internal power supply.

It's the potential effect on my System that I was thinking of. But to be honest the signal obviously permeates everything within a radius of 30+ metres or so, so I guess the question should be, is it going to be any worse by being closer?

Hi DT79 -

I agree there is not much we can do about WiFi signals.

I also think Tog is right -- the router's wall wart power supply is a larger concern, so hopefully there is a separate electrical circuit near your rack that you can connect it to. If not, then I think it would be prudent to move it somewhere else.

Yes - signal strength will be higher the nearer you are to the box itself. I agree, we can't get away from wireless devices in the general environment but given that so much time and money gets spent getting the best cables, making sure the layout and cable dressing is good etc, we can at least give the equipment a better chance of working to optimum. It seems a a bit of a waste to stick a 'noisy' (from an EMI perspective) box right next to the most sensitive parts of your system.

OK, thanks for the thoughts everyone - i will keep the router away.

I wonder whether the benefit of moving my Sonos ZP90 further away also, would outweigh the need for a longer cable - 6m at least, which would probably necessitate a switch to optical?

I have two Aiport Extremes and whilst they look good the power brick (though a fetching shade of crisp white) is still pretty primitive.

Given that the Uniti, and the Qute both come with Wifi aerials it would seems reasonable to conclude tha Naim equipment is relatively immune to interference from Wifi signals!

Well this forum is working better on the imac than on my ipad .... is it just me or is it a bit slow....?

Anyway don't fet about the router - there are more than enough things that can mess with your music.

Very true Michael. I'd still use wired and turn the wireless off on those if i had to use them on my rack. Standalone no problem as they are designed to work with a wireless signal very close by. I'd still not use wireless next to the usual rats nest of Naim cables in a reasonably sized system. But then that's just me
